In protest to the crappy poetry that has recently been published and written on this website, I have decided to write a poem based solely on the comments left on this site. It makes absolutely no sense, has no meaning, has no rhyme or rhythm, and fails to bring up a point, just like the "poems" I see being carelessly thrown around.
I have not cited any of these comments, but they are all from this site so I don't think I'm breaking any laws. So without further ado, I present to you:
The Blog Less Traveled
stephen colbert's hair is not amazing
Huck Finn should be banned
Its funny that you say teen pregnancy
Not really ironic at all
Same shit, new package.
people defend abortion
Much of history is myth that has become legend
Kind of like an elderly relative with Alzheimer's,
I cant believe he hit you with a candy bar.
It's a shame really
I have no objections to selfishness.
I would argue, then, whether any harm can come when
We were all also semen and eggs
Thank the Lord, someone here has some sense!
I find the word God offensive
then why not just ...not have sex?
Okay welcome to reality!
I agree to every last word in that post.
I agree sex appeal is huge
I agree prison shouldn't be comfortable
I agree full heartedly with you. He was not in the right
I agree with you. I might disagree with the post but
I absolutely agree with you.
Look at that!
I'm sorry. I'm not quite sure what you mean but
Thank you for your comment
That is not my point
Awesome

Poetry needs to have rhyme, rhythm, or maybe just a bloody point. I am tired of paragraphs being put into lines and having them passed around as creative works of art. I don't know what it is about today's self proclaimed poets, but most of them are incapable of writing anything nearly as profound as what past masters such as Donne, Frost, or Keats have done. I hope that society has not crushed poetry to such levels as what I have seen as of late.

Real artists create their art for themselves not for what people want to see. What would have happened if Strauss had done what the audience wanted to hear? It would be the same old shit with no progress, no evolution.
But I agree with your point all this abstract shit is really annoying. You cant just have a bunch of words with nothing to grasp onto. Thats called nonsense not art.
By the way, I actually disagree with your entire post but I agree with you.
Yes, I can agree and disagree with something at the same time.
I don't want to read poetry that was written to the specifications of the reader. Poetry should be written from the soul and all that. But it seems that these modern day writers are fooling themselves into believing that they can write real poetry. Try reading something by Donald Hall to get what I'm talking about.

I love it when things come "from the heart". A person's best actions and best decision come from went they don't use their brain.

Yeah, you are right. I hate all this Avant Garde crap.
I didn't know what that meant, so when I looked it up, I had to disagree with what you said. What I read said, "the avant-garde pushes the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm within definitions of art/culture/reality." It has to do with a vanguard in an army that goes forward to scout the area ahead so the rest of the army can follow.
If people follow this crap, they might as well be led off a cliff. And this "poetry" isn't something new, it's a step backwards. So while I agree with what you were trying to say, I disagree with the definition you used.

Any art history major will disagree, even though for all intents and purposes that's a pretty accurate definition.
My roommate is has a big hard on for art history, and he tells me that art objects themselves cannot be avant-garde (if it's definable in artistic terms, is it really pushing any boundaries?), but you can criticize art objects as abstract or whatever with avant garde tendencies. Or something. I didn't really understand the distinction when he ranted about it, and to be honest I kind of turn off whenever he mentions art.
I don't think I'm bougie enough for that.
Now, I know you meant to write a "poem" that is like the crap that is written. But you did call it a poem, "I have decided to write a poem..." and I find it hardly any different than the other "self proclaimed" poets on this site. Where is your proof that you are indeed different than the "others". You are right, no rhyme, rhythm, flow or idea behind it, other than your dislike for people doing the same exact thing that you did and posted. So how is this "piece" not thrown out there. If you wanted to make a point about such things I would suggest you write a GOOD poem, well an actual poem, describing what they are doing. And poetry has been modernized. Just read Charles Bukowskie, he is a poet, and a very modern poet that is very choppy, but has a point behind his poetry. I suggest you read his stuff, though you do need to be open minded for his stuff.
Enjoy.

This was meant to be an ironic sort of thing. And just so you know, I have written several pieces of what I consider good poetry; however, none of them are even remotely approporiate for what we are discussing on this site, so I will keep them to myself for now. I have also seen several good things written by my father and at several random points in the local poetry newspaper. I will have to check out Bukowskie: I'm always open to new poets. But if "modern" poetry means a short story split into lines, then I'd rather leave it be.

No, Dylan dont say that. Dont bring up irony because some people on this site dont know what irony is, and more dangerously others, have an incorrect idea of what irony is.
Most arguments used a good deal of irony and hyperbole to make their points. Clearly some people dont understand this fact. How do people argue againt abortion? They make it seem like every abortion is a partial birth abortion where babies are ripped to pieces when they are scraped out of the womb and prodded with hooks. Its pretty easy to see why he would write the sort of stuff he is against to make his point. Its not hypocritical its irony and hyperbole.
haha. Okay, you have shown me the error of my ways oh Lord. I won't say it's irony when it really is...
It is irony though, just like you said. If people don't get it then it sucks to be them.

Poetry is an art-form. I don't think any one can judge what is "right" poetry.
There are criteria by which to judge the quality of poetry.

I've been writing poetry for almost eight years now, and I agree most of the poetry I've seen on this site is complete shit. I don't have the heart to tell people that though. :s
People keep saying that art is self expression and there fore can't be judged by others, but why the hell would you want to make a fool out of yourself or write something no one can stand? Doesn't make sense to me...
