Top 50 Conservative Songs

LP's picture

Oh, John J Miller, you are one funny, funny man.  You have one of the best satirical  music countdown lists I have ever seen.  I mean, you actually want us to believe that these are all "conservative" songs?

Ha!

Wait -- you mean you're not kidding?  You actually call these the "50 greatest conservative rock songs"?

Oh dear.

I'm sure that if Miller had looked hard enough he would have been able to come up with 50 great songs by conservative musicians.  But he was lazy, and decided to take random lines out of context and say the songs were conservative. And yes, this list took him a year to put together.

You don't have to go far down the list to find an example of the stupidity of the list.  Just look at number one -- the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again."  Apparently, this is the best "conservative" song he could come up with.  There are pro-conservative lyrics like "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."

But wait, it gets better.  Go down to number three -- "Sympathy for the Devil" by the Rolling Stones!  A song from the point of view of Satan himself ... hmm, maybe it's from Karl Rove's point of view (rimshot).

The song is actually, according to Jagger, about the dark side of man.  Did Miller think before he put these songs on the list or was he just up against a deadline?

How about "Revolution" by the Beatles?  It's #7 on the list.

Why, you ask?

"You say you want a revolution / Well you know / We all want to change the world . . . Don't you know you can count me out?" What's more, Communism isn't even cool: "If you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao / You ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow." (Someone tell the Che Guevara crowd.)

This highlights, perhaps better than any other song, the problem with the list.  Miller equates the anti-Maoist line with conservatism; he ignores the fact that John Lennon reportedly wrote it in response to the Vietnam War.  Lennon was no Conservative.

Other <strike>highlights</strike> lowlights:

28. "Janie's Got a Gun" by Aerosmith

How the right to bear arms can protect women from sexual predators

Is this really what he got out of the song?  Are we even listening to the same song?

34. "Godzilla," by Blue öyster Cult.

A 1977 classic about a big green monster -- and more: "History shows again and again / How nature points up the folly of men."

I'm missing the conservative part of this song.  Could it be the folly of men by testing nuclear weapons and creating Godzilla?

35. "Who'll Stop the Rain," by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

No, I'm not kidding. He actually cites a Vietnam-era protest song as a Conservative song.  Imagine telling Conservatives this back then.

38. "I Can't Drive 55," by Sammy Hagar.

A rocker's objection to the nanny state.

Or about a rocker's objection to speed limits.  The song's "rebelliousness" (look!  Sammy can't drive under the speed limit! How rebellious!) did inspire Minutemen's album title "Double Nickels on the Dime"

47. "One," by Creed.

All apologies to their fans (if there are any still out there) but Creed?  Come on.  They belong nowhere near any top-50 list of any kind.

48. "Why Don't You Get a Job," by The Offspring.

I'm sure when The Offspring wrote this song, Neocon Kristol and Ronald Reagan were in their minds.

These aren't all the hilarious abominations on the list.  See if you can find some more!  It's a fun game, and it will keep you entertained for hours.

pretty decent list

I'm new here, but some of you may remember me as the controversial songwriter who penned and recorded a song about Neil Young, reviewed here: http://www.morethings.com/music/neil_young-drblt-let's_impeach_the_president.htm Lately, I've been wondering why there ain't no Republican Rock Stars words and music by Dr. BLT (c)2006 http://www.drblt.net/music/repubrockstars.mp3 so I've taken it upon myself to invite Republicans to record covers of the top 50 conservative tunes as identified by John J. Miller. I've sort of taken the lead by covering this one: Dr. BLT's cover of David Bowie's Heroes: http://www.drblt.net/music/heroes.mp3 use this as an example, but please, Don't Follow Me words and music by Dr. BLT (c)2006 http://www.drblt.net/music/dont.mp3 You may have heard that I invented a new phenom called Blog 'n' Roll, and, yes, it's true, but as far as rock 'n' roll goes, I still have plenty of rough edges to smooth out. Bruce aka Dr. BLT, The Original Blog 'n' Roller

Oops. I forgot about my cover of this top 50 conservative hit:

You Can't Always Get What You Want
Dr. BLT cover of Rolling Stones

aka Dr. BLT, King of Blog 'n' Roll

John Miller forgot to add a song to his list because what about the song, "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears For Fears? I thought that would be a good song because there's already people wanting to be the next president of the U.S. like Hilary Clinton, Rudy Guiliani, John Kerry, etc; also, because of that dispute over the Mexican elections.

Is this really serious?! I mean what was he thinking, but I guess each person interprets a lyric in their own way... TOO BAD HE CHOSE THE WRONG WAY! now he just looks like and idiot!

I almost cried when i saw The Sex Pistols and The Clash on his list. He doesn't deserve to even say their names, let alone the names of all those rock legends.

It wasn't a Conservative war. In fact, here's an interesting piece of trivia that the Democrats try to keep down:

Dwight D. Eisenhower, Republican. '53-'61. Ended the Korean War (sorta)

John F. Kennedy, Democrat. '61-'63. Started Military action in Vietnam

Lyndon B. Johnson, Democrat. '63-'69. ESCALATED the Vietnam War.

Richard Nixon, Republican, '69-'74. WITHDREW from Vietnam (though he didn't do much else).

I suggest in the future you don't let a label confuse your historical research. Seek truth, not enemies.

I'm not particularly interested in looking at some cute historical tidbits, since EVERY president since WWII has dealt some sort of Military engagement. Instead of pursecuting homosexuals and stealing money from the American People, I would much prefer that the Republicans demonstrate some kind of competancy at IMPROVING life for the other 95% of us that aren't in their tax bracket? I'm sure that any republican response to this comment will be inane and bigoted, so instead of wasting the time to post one, why don't you give some money to the next homeless person you see instead of telling them to "get a job"

So I went & read the list. First off, when one thinks of Rock & Roll music, conservative views definatly don't pop up in mind right away, if ever. Rock was never ment to be conservative, it was rebellious, edgy, fun. All the punk bands he named?! Sex Pistols sang of Anarchy and destruction, please point out to me where that falls under conservative. Songs may have lyrics that can be interpreted as conservative, but all it is is interpretation. What gives that man the right to put a label on any of those??

However, I never knew Brick was about a man talking his girlfriend for an abortion & that has been a favorite song of mine for a long time. I guess you learn something new every day.

Great rimshot, by the way.
