Oh, there's just so much to this topic. I love it. I've been dreaming up new reasons not to go to school for years, mostly while in class. Now though, I've gotten up the progression enough to find a fun one.
I've noticed, especially in the higher level classes, that there is so much information that the teachers don't even try to teach it in class. This is true especially in my AP Bio and AP US History classes. There's simply too much info to present it in class, so most of the learning is left to the students to read at home. This has happened so much, though, that these class periods have made themselves largely useless. Since all the learning is done at home, very little of what happens during the hour-long class is of any use. The lab work in bio, maybe one day a week, is the only reason to go to either class other than tests. So I have to wonder - are there some classes that could be done with less classtime than is alloted now? A couple days a week would probably be sufficient for these classes, and with math most of what needs to happen is just the homework for practice, and maybe a lecture or two a week for new concepts.
So if I could get your input on this - would this system work: classes meet 2 or 3 times a week, so every other day, and this lasts for a school day of maybe 4-5 hours. After that, give maybe an hour or two in which there are no scheduled classes but students remain in school to either work on homework or talk with teachers for more instruction (since there will be both slow students and hard concepts in every class). I'd enjoy the extra time, especially since all the reading we're doing burns most of my evenings anyway.
In other words, couldn't high school be more like college?
lol
