Each and every weekday, I'm working from, on average, 3-5 hours of sleep, depending on the amount of work I get. I've informally surveyed fellow classmates (usually upperclassmen), and they have similar sleep amounts. Is it only me, or is 4 hours of sleep unhealthy?
I have to wake up at 5:30am and it is right now, 1:00am. I am always groggy in the morning, especially with only 4 hours of sleep. Of course, my grades are not as high as they used to be. I believe that I can put some of the blame (although not a large part) on my lack of sleep. A lot of problems can arise from sleep deprivation. I hope that my lack of sleep will not cause me to drift off into la-la land when I drive to school each day. There is no guarantee that I will stay awake each morning. I just hope for the best and fill myself up with caffeine.
I'm also considering the possilbility that this problem is only mine and I should just go to sleep earlier even if I have homework or not. But I believe that this problem, sleep deprivation, plagues many of us students...especially high school juniors (the ones preparing maniacally for college admissions).
Well, to those who will comment (and I predict that the batch of comments will be very minimal), any suggestions to those deprived of sleep?

Yeah- work on your homework and get it done, dont turn on the TV or chat with friends while you do it or save it til the last minute (most of my friends who ge little sleep are guilty of just those things). Also as a junior you don't need to be "preparing manically for college admissions" you do that during the summer and you senior year usually.. its usually not worth it working on it this early. So focus on your grades right now, and leave the college admissions for a little later. The saved sleep will help you do better in school anyway.
I agree. There's no need to prepare maniacally for admissions unless you have done terrible in high school.

Even without distractions such as TV or chatting, homework can take a long time, especially with AP or honors classes. High school juniors are expected to begin their prepartion for college. They do start looking at potential colleges and finding scholarships and such. Sure summer and early senior year grant the serious time for applications and essays, but the pressure to prepare begins junior year-- the year primarily looked at by most colleges. (Besides summers are also used for--and should be used in my opinion--for jobs, and vacationing. And for the AP student there is always the dreaded summer homework.)
My school day starts at 7:30 and almost from there on, i'm hitting the books. (with the exception of lunch and breaks) I get to bed around 11 or 12 and get up around 5:30. I admit i have occasional distractions but my homework load is typically pretty heavy on its own. Try and get working asap, (which i need to do soon =)). If you take breaks, which helps to relax and reduce stress, take short ones. Grab a snack, listen to a few songs, and then study again. If you are juggling multiple subjects, you can go through one subject at a time, completing each individually (this is my typical method), or you could work on your subjects in parts. Do physics then work on history then go back to physics. This can work nicely to keep yourself from getting too bored and/or lazy. I hope this helped. I have gone to school with 3 and a half hours of sleep, and it was an awful day. I wish you the best, and get some rest tonight! =)
I started college last fall and i never had problems sleeping. After classes started i found myself staying up later to finish homework. I have to work 3 days a week and i go to school 2 days a week i get about 5 hours a sleep a night and i hate it. I wish there was more time in a day sometimes. I dont have any advice except at any momnet you get do your homework because you may not have time later to do it.
The only advice I have for college is to sleep in between classes. Tuesdays and Thursdys I have about an hour between each class. I set my timer and find a sofa on which to sleep. Actually people can be found sleeping on sofas all over my college.
It's the same at my college, too. I've found myself resting on the library couches before as well. I just take the opportunity to sleep when it finds me.

Library is definitely the best. It's quiet and air conditioned.
If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed...nothing shall be impossible unto you. - Matthew 17:20
Quiet for the most part. Ours now allows cell phones in almost every area. Quite distracting!

You know, you're typically more productive when you get enough sleep every night. Which means you could probably get your homework done more efficiently because you'll be more awake for it. If you're studying that much, I suggest you look at HOW you're studying, and figuring out if there's another way to do it. Upper division classes in college will kill you if a couple AP classes are getting to you now. Oh, and caffeine is addicting and lessens its effect with the more you take it, so try to avoid that. Drink ice water when you study, for example.

I was actually going to blog an old essay I wrote about the sleep deprivation that teens experience, but I can't seem to find it. You are definitely not alone, though. My junior and senior years were spent getting aroug 2-4 hours of sleep a night. And as a side note about the stress of junior year, I seemed to have a lot more stress senior year. I asked a lot of people and they seemed to agree. Hopefully yours will be nice and carefree.
If you take a look at it I believe it has a lot about tv! We are begining to all have 7 minute attention spans because its the amount of time a tv show runs before another commercial airs. We can even think for ourself, tv is beginging to do the thinking!
If you think it's bad as a junior, prepare yourself, senior year is worse. As a senior I've overloaded my schedule (don't make that mistake) played varsity sports, and decided that working 25 hours a week would be fine. Not. There's only so much caffeine your body can take and when you're working on 2-3 hours of sleep, it's never enough. It's important to pad your resume for college, but don't kill yourself in the process. Enjoy high school, you're only there once.
Eh, it's all about time management. Some people can handle it, some can't. I worked 70+ hours a week plus went concurrent full time my senior year with no problem. The only way I could do this was because I managed my time well.

honestly I wish I could give you some advice but i'm dealing with the same problem.. I just dont have the time anymore with all that I have going on in my life.
I understand what you are saying. I know it is hard, I had it hard in highschool to and my little sister had it even harder. But, in all honesty you will be well prepared when you enter college, and to tell you truth it doesnt get easier!
Remember to take breaks, and time for you!!! Wishing you the best of luck....

It's basically the same for me i get out of school at 3:00 i get home at 3:30 i get ready for work and leave at 4:00 i work from 5-9:30 then i have to clean the front of the house which is a restaurant then i take a 20-30 minute drive home , get home at 10:15 do homework
when i finish it's about 11:30 then i just relax until 12 am then go to sleep and i have to wake up at around 5:45 to get ready for my 1st period!!
I once read that the amount of sleep that each person needs every night is different. Some may only need four hours while others need 12. In your case, however, I don't think you are getting enough sleep. With work AND school, you are probably wearing yourself ragged and should try and get at least 6 hours a night. I'm not a professional or anything, it's just an opinion.....Hope you get some more sleep!!! It should help you focus and improve your grades as well.....it may put a bit of a damper on your social life, though ;)
I agree! It's different for everyone. I don't need that much, but my husband does. It makes a rough situation sometimes, but we cope.
