Has anyone here ever thought about the effects of our country's ( America) laws on our society?
Yes?...me too!
No?...you should...
Here is the reason i ask.
Think about the alcohol drinking laws here, and compare them to those of England.
( yes i used this for a disussion forum too!)
ok. in england at the age of 14 you may drink a glass of beer with a meal at a restraunt, at 16 you can shandy( 1) in pubs, and at 18 you can legally purchase alcohol in pubs not just shandy.
in america if you arent 21 and you are caught drinking you are doomed to punishment.
ok now ..in england. out of 1648 participants in a 2002 survey 12% had admitted to drinking and driving, 44% had driven after drinking within the past year. (2) in england the death rate of drunk driving crashes is 3000/year.(3)
and in america?
....42,636 people killed in 2005 aalone, not to mention some 2.9 million injured.
1.5 million were arrsted in 2006 for dunk driving,(4) not to mention the ones who get away with it.
to me this is a description of what we should use as an example of why we are in fact too strict. in England their drinking laws are more relaxed and they have fewer alcohol related car wrecks...coincidence?...i dont think so... if you think about the general nature of people, teens especially, in the aspect of the " hey this is a rule lets break it" mindset, it makes sense that if we were to loosen our laws people would not( in theory of course) be so tempted to break the laws. it is a thrill to break laws for some.
Just a thought....what do you think?

I've always thought our laws on drinking were stupid...and I don't even drink...I think if we had a law like england's we would be able to assimilate to the adult lifestyle...and I also think we need to focus more on education of responsible drinking...not banning it from teens
i completely agree......if only there was a way of convincing the rest of our screwed society that are dead set on our laws, i am a dweller of the lovely ible belt region and trust me there is no way in hell to convince these people of it......not even proven facts ......i just dont get why people are so blind to there own ignorance at these things.......
yeah I think people are ignorant about stuff like this b/c they aren't willing to look beneath the surface to see the good it can serve
"assimilate to the adult lifestyle"
I don't think it'd be an easy transition and the argument that a culture that's induced with alcohol at a younger age will necessarily equate to more rapid maturation is unwarranted.
But I agree with the post and your idea of focus. Reducing the drinking age would be a step in the right direction.

yeah...nor do I see it as an easy transition...that's why we need something to help us better assimilate as I put it
and I know we wouldn't necessarily educate better...but it provides us with more opportunities to do so...which is at least a step in the right direction
Limonade mixed with beer is such a German kid drink. :-P
It's not my drink of preference, but mixing Coca-cola with, say, Budweiser, Coors, or Miller (any variety) when they are the only beers available to you makes them not taste like shit.
Sorry, I know Limonade mixed with beer was a reference you used. ;-) Do you have a link to that or anything? It sounds like an interesting read.

it is just part of one of the statistics pages i was reading.......i have been dyine to figure out a way to throw that point out there and found that so i did it......are u german or using that as a referance?
Biermischgetränke--mixed beer drinks. You can mix beer with a lot of things--coca-col, Fanta, limonade. If you go to Germany, you can even find pre-mixed beer drinks sold in bottles.
usually it's a non-alcoholic beer (when given to kids) mixed with either limonade or Fanta. It's pretty popular.
I lived over in Germany for a couple of years. Beer is kind of a big deal. ;-)

Well, the brain does not finish developing until the age of 21. So therefore drinking before that may cause harm or stunt growth. Of course, the brain is not fully understood and many alcohol activists say that the brain never stops developing.

but, it is also said that a small amount of alcohol every day is good for the body. most people also over look that eating appless, potatoes 9 uncooked i think) raw dough, stuff like that also causes you to ingest some form of alcohol. yes great amounts will cause defects, hence fetal alcohol syndrome and people that are just plain dumb from drinikng too much......
i am for the beleif that it ( the brain) continues to grow depending on need, yes that means after 21, but if people arent forced out of drinking they wont be as tempted to drink as much theoretically so maybe it could help reduce intake and there fore benefit in multiple ways.....but i am only 17...i know not much...
Yea, but it only works in other countries because that is how they have always been, it is much to late for our country. Much, much too late.
Plus who would fund our highways?!

Bring back the Prohibition Party! Harah!

Hip hip hooray?
Well if prohibition came around again, what would be the new law for states to follow to get highway funds? Interesting thought...
Après la pluie le beau temps. ♥
I assumed the federal speed limit determined funding... at least it did for a bit in Montana, because we're so reticent.
Tell me what you think of this new funding idea: http://www.progressiveu.org/200058-whos-down-energy-competition

Well it could be for certain aspects of high way funding.. I am not exactly sure.
Energy wars sounds interesting.. hahah kidding about the wars part. Kinda. But really, that isn't a half bad idea. The bad half though is that a lot of it could rely on the citizens of the state and well... we all know that could go over pretty badly. If the state though started reducing all their energy usage, that could still help significantly!

Why sure. How's yer state doing on that front?

How is my state doing with energy saving? Or highways? Both suck. I live in California. We have money for... well nothing!

yeah and orange juice...I actually know someone who had been inhaling orange juice by the gallon b/c they were sick...got pulled over and actually had a bac b/c of the o.j.
well people do do stuff like that too...and the funding of our highways really should begin to be supported much more by actual funds not us depending on some drunkards to go get in their cars and whatnot...that is just retarded!!1

Not really understanding what you said..?
Après la pluie le beau temps. ♥
to you i was saying that we shouldnt depend on people's drinking habits to fund our highways...we should find better means to fund
Make sure you use the reply button so we know who you are talking too.
Anyways, we cannot find a better way really because the federal government is the one that pays for them, any other way of funding our highways would be out of the states pocket and most states don't have that kind of money. It isn't relying on people's drinking habits per say, but the federal government.

YAY reply button, ( sorry didnt even think about using it...)
ok so yes, most states dont have that kind of money, and i am not sure any one would even want to pay out of pocket, maybe not here at least, east texans seem to be ovrely stingy sometimes......i read that you were from california, what do they get most of there funding from, what do you think would be a better option?
