Okay, we all post on here how we are tired of those people who over blog and how we need to find a way to stop it. Most of us dedicated (but not overly, lol) bloggers had come to the concession that no one reads their frivolous entries anyway and there is no way they ( the over bloggers) are going to win the contest because of the lack of reads, so we all need to calm down. BUT I am caling for help from all of you versus complaining as we have done in the past. Overblogging does become an issue when people are posting over 30 times a day. Yes, certain users are doing that. Most of us may have only posted 30 times in the last 2 months. SO it DOES MATTER! In the past reads were the most effective way to get points; but that is no longer true. Because the site has had so much traffic, posting is the only real way to get points, which encourages overblogging. But what can we do, short of calling out names and directly attacking said overbloggers? Start a boycott.
I will be the first one to adhere to this boycott, which I have techniqually been following the entire contest:
I debatechick promise not to post over 7 times in one day unless breaking news occurs and I really feel like I have to talk about it. AKA it cant wait until tomorrow ( and I think seven is very generous compared to most of us who post once a day because we are struggling for topics because the overbloggers overblogged them all).
I also refuse to read posts written by over bloggers until they calm down and stop overblogging, even if the post looks interesting because I want to uphold the dignity of the contest. Overblogging will be defined as anyone who poast liek 10 posts in a row, or obviously is posting way too much in a reasonable amount of time.
In addition I pledge not to read post about peoples dogs* and other matters of frivolous natures as not to encourage this type of posting, which is usually done by overbloggers.
By commenting below and saying 'I do" I will adhere to this pledge and spread the word ( which I would say is really blogging for progress). If we join together we CAN make a difference. I know it is tempting to overblog just to keep up with everyone else, but aws the old saying goes, just because everyone else is jumping off a cliff, does not mean we should also. Please join me in trying to uphold the integrity of the mission of PU and the scholarship offered to those who really deserve recognition for their efforts.

Eh. I'm not that dedicated to stop myself from throwing in too many pieces of my mind in a day. I usually just don't reply to threads that are obviously not well thought-out so as not to encourage the poster--not more than once, at least.
There are so many possts on here a day by a vast number of bloggers. It is clear who over blogs. All that I am asking people to do is skip over those blogs and go on to another one. Still plenty of blogs to read and good discussion to have. In fact by skipping over those posts made by over bloggers, people are actually going to find a lot more blogs that challenge their minds versus reading blogs because they do not want to push the next button.
I think the real problem is that this contest should not be based upon how many times a day a person can post a blog but rather the quality of the blogs and comments that they DO post. That's just sensible! It bothers me that 50 posts about how cute your dog is can ultimately earn you a scholarship that is intended for "progressive" youth. But maybe I'm misunderstanding the format of this competition...
No you are completely understanding it right, and hte editors of PU know this, and if my information is correct, they are planning to change the format of the next competition, but until the end of June, this is how it is.
I do agree that maybe it shouldn't matter how many times a person blogs but instead the quality of what they blog. As far as Overblogging goes....its a competition and if I had the time (or have the time) I would post as much as I could because I want to win....I don't see the need to boycott that seems more like a hater move to me. I mean if the blogs are not well thought out and just some mumble jumble so the blogger can get points that is up to the officials to call out and say "no way" but other than that there is nothing that we can do. I would think that we could find other ways of contributing to the solution.
most of them are not well thought out. they are either not progressive or they are stuff that is probably copied and pasted. do you have a better solution? I have been trying to think of one. And its not about winning, its about the person who derseves to win winning, and deserving does not mean posting as many times as possible, it means actualyl making a difference, or at least being on the right path to do so. ITs about taking something away from this site and giving to others, sharing thoughts and ideas, not cheating to win.
Haha. It cracks me up thinking the winner of this progressive contest wins by CHEATING. OMG!
If the moderators are not going to change the rules until next June, then there's nothing that can be done. You can start a petition if you want and they may change their mind, but I personally don't care all that much.
I agree. To much emphasis is put on quantity instead of quality of the blog.
Some people just repost magazine articles and write a paragraph ask me "What do YOU think?". It's frustrating!
I do. Until death do us part.
I haven't been here all that long, but if you're talking about the people who post six blogs in a row, obviously by the method of cut and paste, then I'm all for the boycott.
i agree. good points.
I do.
Even though I have 5 or 6 blogs out.
I think lames are basically trying to post over 10 blogs a day over non-sence.
Yes, there is a contest, but stop feenin.
If you don't make, you don't make it.
OuuP too bad, Try next time!
but for some of us its not that simple. Its the fact that we have been here since the contest began in Jan. posting every day about relevent topics, actually being progressive, to get over ran by someone who does not ahve a mind of their own and might when becuae they put out junk. its not even about myself winning, its about one of my peers who was here from the begginning and needs/deserves the scholarship getting it. I know how hard I have worked, and I know how hard others have worked for this. Try agian does not even describe how much work we hav put into it. Now if we lost fair and square IE better writers than ourselves, that is one thing. But that is not the issue.
i could see how overblogging is a problem when people are talking about things like Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt but if it is political and progressive i say blog away. yea most people wont read it but someone like me for instance isnt doing it because i want so many people to reade it i just want to get the information i have out and have people reply and maybe give me a different viewpoint. I dont think this can be contained. The way the scholarship is set up people will overblog about pointless things sometimes but not all people.

If you produce about six new entries within an hour, it's usually safe to conclude that none of them are well thought-out. And quality is almost always better than quantity.
how is it safe to conclude that. what if what i have to say i have spent hours of research on and have talked about with numerous people. maybe its because i have never really blogged before but i have a lot to say that i have spent a lot of time pondering and learning about. it depends on the circumstance i think.
ahaidaris
No, it's not. I've spent years thinking about things, too, but if I decided to pour them out all at once, I doubt any of them would be worthy to be read.
Besides, it's been acknowledged that more than a couple of your entries are incoherent rants. Not well thought-out.
yes i know some of my blogs are incoherent rants, sorry for that sometimes i get carried away. Anyways i'll try to slow it down.
ahaidaris
I'd have to agree wth Ahairdaris on this one. Even for me, sometimes I just get inspired to write so much in small amount of time. But I consider my pieces to be well thought out and sincere efforts to progress as a blogger in this community.
I generally consider blogs that took less than 10 minutes to write (which would be 6+ blogs in an hour) not really worth my time. After 10 minutes, then there was probably a good amount of effort put into writing the blog.

Visit my blog.
agreed
I have been doing this boycott silently for a long while. Nearly all of my entries are long, well thought out, and normally after doing a lot of reading around beforehand. I do, on average, one of these entries each day. That's it.
So, if the Powers That Be At ProgressiveU reward these overbloggers, then this scholarship is simply a sham.
Citizen Press Revolution
ya me too. I have always not read those blogs I thought should not be here or they were a mass production of blogs that were not well thought out.
Some people just have a lot of time to do nothing so they choose to do this. If you dont like it, dont read their posts.
The problem is that they have an enticing title, and then bore us with something stupid. Maybe if we knew who the author was before we clicked on it, then it would be better. We all know who the overbloggers are, and we all know that whatever they write is stupid.
Back about 2 months ago, there was an email sent out with the names of all the top 10 people who were winning the contest--and they all had well-thought out, well-researched, well-done blogs, and there weren't many of them. Now, its ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. You never see any of those bloggers anymore, and if they do, then its them trying to figure out a way to cut the loopholes out.

ya i never see any of them anymore, but when I do look for them i see that most of them are posting every day still, just they get lost in alll the blogs, but i miss seeing them too. and if they are not posting i think its because a lot of users on here are seniors in hs and so graduation etc... has been dominating their time (or at least that is my excuse- lol)
And when you say " a way to cut the loopholes out" what do you mean. I know several of my blogs lately have been outlining the rules, etc....but that is because instead of witing blogs I have begun to comment a lot more. I realized that commenting gets more points than blogs because since the site is so congested blogs do not get a lot of reads- so commenting gets more points. not to mention, i would rather read what other people have to say that toot my own horn! lol
But I like to think that mine actually show critical thought and are (most of the time) about political and/or hard news issues.

There is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come.
I was not talking about you, I have a lot of respect for you. I think you should win one of the scholarsips. If you have ever ever overblogged its becasue if you cannot beat them, join them.
Okay, I am in the dark.
I've seen a wide variety of intellect and a wider range of maturity since joining this site less than 48 hours ago. Not that I'm perfect, but I can usually see through someone's lame attempt at an argument versus someone who has actually tried to post something thought-provoking. And yes, sometimes the immature behavior can be thought provoking too :) But I think it would really help some of us new people who actually are trying to contribute something to know who's full of excretion beforehand.
I see so many of these posts regarding overbloggers, and apparently one in particular and have no clue who anyone is talking about. I've read no less than 7 separate blogs dedicated to these people. While I know it would be counterproductive (and apparently time-consuming?) to start listing the names off on a post with a spot saying "Watch out for these people" Could there be some way of letting us know discreetly?

lol, well maybe you are not really witnesssing the problem because everyone is busy with memorial day weekend so no one is really online and because PU is doing an excellent job of handling the problem. And it my post, An Open Letter to the Editors of PU, or whatever it is called, one of the editors commented and actually listed a certain users name. So there is my discreet warning, lol.
Ahhh, LOL, that was a long read, but well worth it.
Thanks!
