Throughout recent years, the issue of a flag burning amendment has been brought up. Some Congressional members feel that it is wrong for American citizens to burn our national flag. Personally, I think its okay for several reasons. First of all, when people burn the flag, they are protesting the acts of the government, NOT condemning our nation. The protestors are in no way trying to disrespect the United States as a country (normally), but simply show their disdain for current government policies. Since the flag envigorates Americans, and unconciously or conciously evokes emotion, protestors use it as a tool to get their point across. Infringement upon a personal right guaranteed by the Constitution, the right to protest, should not be allowed. Amendments take a very long time to pass (2 to 3 years normally), and jam up government processes. Let's save the amendment process for more pressing situations in our country. We have a failing healthcare system, an ongoing conflict in Iraq (which needs stopped), a dwindling economy, and strained world relations. Instead of worrying about minor things like flag burning, and further escalating the situation by passing an amendment, lets work to stop the need for so many protests by improving our government policies, and lessening our problems abroad.

I totally agree with you!! I think it is fine to burn the flag! t

truly in some places (i mean other countries) People burn the American Flag because they really do hate America (this would be Iran and Palestine, most likely, and maybe like Cuba)
but I have seen it burned in Pakistan (i'm originally from there) and I personally know that those people only did it because they hate Bush (they even have dummy's with Bush's head that they burn) and the US governement (like they really hate him a lot and blame him for a lot of things)
but I don't appreciate them (in pakistan) doing that because it only makes them look uneducated and idiotic (truthfully a lot of the mobs/protesters in third world countries are uneducated)

It is not illegal to burn flags in America right? We're protected by the First Amendment. I still don't get why people would want to burn flags. Even though they're trying to say something, it would be better if they actually come out and say it instead of destroying properties. It doesn't make sense to me at all...

They are saying something, but also burn the flag. They are not saying something BY burning the flag, but saying something AND burning the flag. The flag acts merely as an intensifier. The passion of what they are trying to get across is further expanded by the burning flag.
If you have a problem with the government protest, but not by burning the flag. Remeber when you burn the flag, you are burning your right to have rights. I say this because you are burning up the very symbol of the, United States of America.

The U.S. Flag represents america, and america is what gives you that right, so if your burning it then your burning your rights.
thats a good way to put it!
Alright, but do you think that an amendment is necessary? I am saying in my post that to escalate the situation and try to pass an amendment paralyzes Congressional actions because the attention is focused on the amendment. And, they cannot burn their rights, because with American citizenship comes these certain rights. By burning a flag no one is gaining or losing anything, they are simply protesting something the government has done. They do not burn the flag to show everyone that they are discrediting their rights as American citizens. You must interpret the reason for burning from the flag burner's perspective, not an onlooker. I would not burn an American flag, but for those people that do, I think it is a good way to provoke the public and media, thereby getting the protestor's point across.
