My America and Obesity blog coming soon...

It's a conspiracy, I say. Th European Union doesn't allow importations of American food. Genetically modified food has been proven to be bad for our health, but the media hasn't officially enlightened us of that. We're barraged with commercials encouraging us to gorge on foods like the aforementioned substances. And we wonder why we're so obese?
Keep in mind however that the choice to hit up the fast food restaurants are in the hands of the consumer. Meals like this aren't that bad- in moderation. Since a lot of people don't know how or don't bother to prepare healthy meals, the problem gets so much worse.
Do the marketing execs care? Do the restaurants care? Not really. And maybe they shouldn't. It is not their responsibility to monitor your intake. Really, who thought fried potato slices covered with cheese and bacon, dipped in Ranch was on any nutrition plan?

How is a rice plant that contains vitamins not present in the rest of the diet bad for you?

I read that the danger of GMO's is one of the top underreported stories of 2007, along with the high-tech genocide in the Congo.

i used to be all for genetically modified foods, especially after i heard about the rice decreasing eye problems in asian countries and the chance to increase agricultural productivity in africa, but i always wondered about their safety. if they aren't totally proven to be safe, i don't want to be eating them. i'm not sure if rice is included, because the article only cites experiments on soy and corn, but who knows?
Increase agricultural productivity?
They tried that in Mexico with corn... it ended up slaughtering the economy in the places they tried it and the genetically modified plants refused to propagate. So they'd have an overabundance of corn that's way to expensive and supposedly better for you that makes bigger, better, more productive corn, but after the first harvest, it never flowered again.
Now, people who make their living growing corn have to buy the expensive genetically modified crap in order to keep up with the Jones's who can afford it, and it's less productive.
I'm not sure genetically modified rice, corn, or agricultural products in general is a good idea.

Because the genetically modified seed is patented, if it cross-pollinates a field that uses its own, unmodified seed, or if the seed blows off a truck and gets mixed in with a field of unmodified seed, the company that owns the patent can sue the farmer who finds himself unwillingly growing their seed, even though he never planted it. Monsanto has sued a couple of moderately-sized family farms right out of existence over this. A movie called "The Future of Food" interviews a couple of the farmers. It's available on Netflix.

Thanks ediblewoman, forgot to mention that.
If it cross pollinates in ends up taking over their fields, too, killing all the real, good corn. Sad story.

Everyone always talks about the obese people, but what about the underweight people. NOT EVERY AMERICAN IS FAT. I hate how people just assume we're all fat just because we have stupid corperate food chains that have fatty foods. We aren't stupid, we're capable of making good choices.

Calm down, nobody is really trying to make a point about that... Lets just stay on topic.
in the world. being underweight is a problem. eating disorders are a problem. but so is obesity, and obesity is one of our biggest health problems here. so that's what this article is talking about.
about the good choices, there are children who don't have a choice about what their parents feed them, and grow up on this stuff, never knowing anything better. and there are people with deep rooted emotional problems who put on fat as a way to shield themselves from the rest of the world. i don't think they really stop to think about whether they should get the parfait or the fries at mcdonalds. and even if they do, chances are they're going to eat like five of them anyway. so sometimes it's not so simple as good choices.
Those parfait's are disgusting for you. Just as bad as the fries, if not worse.
So are their salads. It's not really a choice of what's better for you at McDonalds or places like that. It's a choice of whether or not you should eat there at all.

I boycott this place. I can't stand how unhealthy it is. I remember being a kid and begging to go to Mcdonald's because of the toys in the happy meals, never realizing i was endagering my health with transfats and cholesterol.
Most children beg to go to McDonald's and most parents make their children eat there because the food is cheaper, they have the Dollar Menu with a variety of choices you can get a whole meal from the dollar menu without spending 5 dollars.
Kids are inundated with unhealthy food commercials so much that that's all they want.
-Sonja :)
"Democracy works only when you vote. When you don't take the time to vote for the candidate you find the least offensive, you run the risk of electing the candidate you find the most offensive."
Unhealthy foods are what children see mostly and one reason is because its much more cheaper than the healthy foods.
is that when you grow up on stuff like fastfood, it becomes a comfort food for you in your adult years- something associated with childhood. chances are, you're going to continue to eat junk throughout life. it sucks. and i'm not saying that's everybody, but it does happen.
That's true eating fast food is a bad habit that was mostly started from childhood. We get so use to just stopping at McDonald's to get a burger and fries rather than going to the supermarket to get some fruits and veggies.
I'm only guilty of eating one thing on that list. And when I go out, I almost always bring something home with me. Last weekend, I ended up bringing enough home for 3 additional meals. Just because something is offered at a restaurant, and is high in calories and fat doesn't mean it's always eaten in one sitting.

I think the reason so many of these foods are on the list are because of the ridiculous portion sizes in American restaurants. I recently saw a news report on the correct portion size which recommended that you take home half of your food when you go out to a restaurant. Not only will it help you to be healthier, but you can also be more economical.
What you eat is not as important as the amount you eat, as long as you get enough vitamins to ward off deficiency.
Eat less, live longer, is simply the overwhelming winner in longevity research. All of the Low Fat, Carb, sugar is just faddish bunk. Simply eating less beats super vitamins, High fiber, all natural, and hormone replacement. The problem is we love to eat.
I am betting the source for this arbitrary list of worst foods has a best food list full of stuff that tastes like crapola. Feed it to a goat.

"If you are 20 and not a liberal, you have no heart.

Yea you have to eat in moderation. Not too much at one time. Eat some now and the rest later becuase its not good to stuff all in at once.
Mmmmm.... makes me hungry!
Cheese fries and mozzarella sticks, anyone?

I love cheese fries! I usually bake my own fries until they're crispy. Then I turn the broiler on.... I add a mixture of shredded cheeses- 2% colby or sharp cheddar and pepper jack. If I feel so inclined, I sprinkle a little of the real bacon bits (Hormel's are less fat than real bacon). Serve it up with some light ranch.... YUM. Better than Outback's!
I'm also a sucker for mozzarella sticks... I rarely go anywhere that offers them though. Arby's has the best! I think it's the marinara sauce...

"Democracy works only when you vote. When you don't take the time to vote for the candidate you find the least offensive, you run the risk of electing the candidate you find the most offensive."
The problem with this list is that they are all very large proportioned meals. Like the Quiznos sandwich is a large. I can hardly eat a small! I believe you can eat what you want in moderation and with some consistent exercise you'll be fine. Some of these things scare me though, they all have astounding amounts of fat and calories. I couldn't imagine what I would feel like after an "awesome blossom". Ick!
Is that the big fried onion? Who sits down and eats a full one of those? I love onion rings, and those are good, but that's only with three other people eating off of it...
I generally eat very little at each meal. I never order anything at a restaurant that won't heat up well. I always ask for lunch sized portions, even if they charge dinner prices. Even lunch-sized portions are too big.
I grew up in a family where we couldn't leave the table until everything was eaten. That's never a good idea- hard habit to break. I think today, people add junk food with real food on their kids' plates, and the real food doesn't get eaten much.
-Sonja :)

Ya that is that onion ring flower thing. That was my point exactly, nobody eats these things alone! It is gross to think that anybody could or would eat it by themselves. I always bring home my food. Especially as a poor college student it is always nice to know I have some leftovers for the next couple of days. :]
Yea you can barely eat a small Quizno's sandwich but your just one person. I believe many people buy the large and eat most of it. You're right we have to learn how to eat in moderation.
I am shocked about the turkey burger and the taco salad!
http://www.progressiveu.org/blog/ediblewoman
That turkey burger must be HUGE! Actually, if it's a turkey burger made of both white and dark meat, it's the exact same amount of fat as ground beef. I can't eat a burger from anywhere- I really don't need a half a pound of meat at one sitting. ICK.
And how about 20 oz of steak?! That is OVER A POUND! Do people really eat that much??? When I get steak, I buy the smallest they're selling- usually about 3 or 4 ounces. That's plenty with my baked potato and salad!
-Sonja :)

You would never think all those things had so many calories and fat in them. Some of them are even supposed to be healthy for you and they seem to be bad as you know what. I am not a big calorie counter but man those are a lot of calories! # 18 really got to me. And then they have the nerve to go put on there that is is really made for two people. Two people. Do they think we barely like to eat or what. I rate this one a 5 because you helped me learn something that I did'nt know. Thanks.
