It has just occurred to me tonight is my last night of visual media influence. It almost feels daunting, since I've yet to come up with alternative ways to spend time with friends if we can't watch movies or television. My tiny list that I've created in the past... oh... three minutes includes board games (which I do not own), We <3 Katamari, and cooking. I have a feeling that it may be some time before I gain popularity with my friends. But who knows? A dinner party may be in order!
On that note, I am having a sleepover with two of my friends tomorrow night in my dorm. And I am not sure what we're going to do. I don't drink, I don't do anything horribly questionable, and I'm avoiding spending money seeing as how I'm unemployed and a poor college student. Maybe we can brainstorm. Good idea.
So since tonight is my last night of influences, I'm basking in the glory of Sex and the City and whatever else I can rot my brain with. If I had any movies with me, I'd be watching them. It feels like a diet. The night before day one of your diet, eating as much as you can before you suddenly cut your body off of the junk that once ran through your veins. I hope this ends in a better way than most diets. Yo-yo television addictions. Probably not so flattering.
Anyhow, tomorrow is day one of my media diet. It will probably be easier to start than to sustain. I may have to alter this in order to make it more practical. But for the time being, I'm sticking with the original plan to renounce television, film, and magazines in order to become more comfortable with how I am naturally. The more I see them tonight, the more I realize how ridiculous Hollywood ideals are. I will recover.

It's a shame she is denouncing all media, since it is obvious that this sight is a good thing for so many people. It's like trying to cut out ALL sugar from your diet- no sane person can actually do that. Hmmm.... Some chocolate milk sounds good about now.

The medium is the message. The simple fact that we use visual medium like television to communicate affects how we think and operate. Total commitment should be interesting.
Res ipsa loquitur.
memor mori, mahalo.
It's more like going from whole milk to low-fat. It's a healthier choice, and mixing the two to get to the latter would ease things up. Total commitment is admirable. I'm excited

i'm with you all the way with the poor college student and with hollywood idols their tshirt would pay for my college tuition.
I wish you luck.

My husband and I used to swear off media together. I think it's amazing how LITTLE you miss television after a while. Now I have a two year old, and it's nearly impossible to make it through a day without plopping her in front of the television to give me a few moments of peace. Anyway, the less time you spend in your home, the less tempted you'll be by television. Go to a cafe with your friends, instead. Develope a hobby, (art, anyone?), and cultivate that long lost art of conversation. Amazing how much you'll find out about your friends when you actually talk to them. For games, I recommend: Pit, Cranium!, and Dread Pirate. ;)
You could go to a zoo, or some place calm like a nature resort. Maybe you could include your friends in your exercise plan. Go jogging with them, climb trees, play with sidewalk chalk. Get in touch with the physical world, whilst letting go of the material!
