How many times have you heard the expression don't let the bed bugs bite? Probably a billion or more. Then how many times have you actually thought you were going to get bit by these so called bed bugs? Probably only a few times.
Mattresses are not as clean as we think they are. They get used by people, by dogs, by bugs... I for one, never thought about it because I hardly actually see my mattress, just the sheets and comforter. However, when I heard this disturbing fact, I couldn't belive it. And I found out it was published in the Wall Street Journal, so it has to be at least a little true.
Every 10 years, mattresses double in weight due to sweat, oil and being filled with dust mites and their detritus. (For those of you who aren't a walking dictionary, detritus means debris/ waste/ your bed is being used as a toilet for these dust mites). Also, a study by Ohio State University showed that a typical used mattress has anywhere from 100,000 to 10 milion dust mites inside it.
My dad has me flip my mattress a few times a year. I think its so it wears evenly or something. But wouldn't gravity cause the dust mites to move to the floor side of the bed, so when I flip it, I would be closer to them? Ick. No more mattres flipping for me.
Try sleeping on that.

That's basically gross and I don't want to hear that. Haha. I'm not really too worried about it though, because if it was a major problem, there would have to be some sort of commercial or public service announcement saying you should change your mattress every so many years. If they were harmful in any way more newspapers than the Wall Street Journal Would pick it up.

Yea I would hope that if it was a major problem that it would have gotten more attention... but who knows.
They do sell mattresses that are supposed to reduce the number of impurities that get inside the mattress. Maybe soon there will be a completely impenetrable mattress.
They've also got protective covers that breathe but don't allow liquid or dust through. I have one with my mattress (it's pretty sweet; my mattress is under warranty but if it gets stained, the warranty's void, EXCEPT with this awesome cover!! haha!)
So that's another step to keeping our mattresses pure.
Although can you imagine if we had perfectly clean mattresses how weak our immune system would be?! heh

Thats interesting. do you wrap your mattress in it? or zip it up or something? hmmm, then people could wet the bed and leave no trace! Haha!
It's just like any mattress cover you could buy; it wraps around the mattress like a sheet.
It's soft. The underside is semi-shiny, but not plastic-y. It doesn't make any noise (like ruffling around when you're asleep) and it breathes, but you could spill coffee on it and it stays right on top of the soft side and doesn't seep through.
Then you just throw it in the washer and dryer and put it back on the bed! It's awesome.
The lady I bought it from says she sells a lot of them to parents of bed-wetters or to geriatric people who leak from various places.

I have one of these mattress supercover things, too! No more worrying about ANYTHING with it on. Nuclear attack? No problem, I'll have a nice comfy bed to come home to.
Mattresses are so gross. Carpet is equally disgusting, IMO.

That's interesting...I will definitely like to research more into that.
By impurities do you mean bugs or sweat/oils or both?

All of the above. It's kinda plastic-ey on the bottom, and more like a towel on the upper side. All you have to do is wash it from time to time.

The phrase don't let the bed bugs bite actually came from earlier times when they only had straw or cotton like cots instead of beds. This is interesting blog though nice to know, but scary.

Love comments? I do too!
If I had the choice between a straw bed full of bugs or a floor, I pick the floor. That is disgusting!
