Planes, ? and Automobiles

My title is missing trains. So is America. Since moving to Japan a year ago, I’ve really come to realize how handy, safe, and practical trains are. Japan’s Shinkansen (Bullet Train) gets people from A to B in “no time” safely and more efficiently than busses, cars, or planes. Why doesn’t my home country adopt that idea??

Wake up, America. It’s time to realize a new way of doing things. It’s time to make some changes for the sake of the future of our citizens and country.

I recently visited family in America during my vacation. My itinerary included going from Wisconsin to Virginia to Arizona to Idaho and back to Wisconsin. Sounds expensive and hectic, right? Oh yeah. It was. I spent more time in airports than I would ever care to again, during which I had plenty of time to think. Does anyone else think America’s public transportation system is as pathetic as I do??

Trains are a main form of transportation all over Europe and parts of Asia. Most developed nations in the world use high-speed trains far more than airlines to get people from place-to-place. Why not America, too? Come on! Give us a choice between spending loads on an airline ticket or sitting on a bus or in a car for days. With a high-speed train infrastructure, Americans could get from place-to-place more cheaply, very safely, much more quickly than busses, and with the satisfaction of knowing they’re not blasting millions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

In addition to the trains between cities in Japan, I absolutely love the city trams that run within the city (my city is too small for a subway system). They are cheap, efficient, clean, and aren’t blasting nasty exhaust all over the place. It’s a shame that American cities have turned their backs on these forms of public transportation.

I don’t understand why more Americans aren’t pushing for alternatives for transportation, especially as the fuel prices continue to eat away at our pocketbooks. It’s time for a change. Who’s with me?

That sounds so cool, the bullet train and all. We should really get some here in America.
