Imagine being a 17 years old girl in love with a 19 year old boy. If you have strict parents, your dad may say no, and your mom may give you a sex lecture and say just don't tell your dad, but could you ever, in your wildest dreams, imagine the community turning against you and stoning you to death for it? This instance describes just one of the so far 598 "honor killings" going on in Kurdistan.
Now you may be saying to yourself, wtf is Kurdistan. Well, it's not a country, it's a community, if you will, divided by Iran, Iraq, Turkey, and Syria, of people who share the same religion, language, and history. They are the largest ethnic group in the world without their own country. So why the division? Kurdistan is rich in natural resources such as oil, iron, and water, so they have been denied on several occations the right to claim their homeland.
Over the years, thousands have died fighting for Kurdistan's independence. These soliers are cursed in the eyes of the countries that rule the Kurds as guerrillas and rebels.
But when it comes to the humanity of places like Kurdistan, what with it's unjustified killings and wrongly governed rebels (from the standpoint of an average American), could we really do anything to help or would an intervention turn Kurdistan into the new Afghanistan? Should we just keep our big American noses out of their business or could we overpower the countries who think (well, do) own Kurdistan and be hailed by it's people? And could we teach them the beauty of life and that love is precious.... (I guess that's how we would approach the killings.)
It just makes me think about the war we are already in. Are we justified to be there? I mean, just by walking the streets without being completely covered, women of the U.S. Army are insulting their culture (unintentionally, of course). I don't mean disrespect toward our soldiers, I greatly appreciate anyone willing to even go through basic training for their country, much more someone willing to cross seas and fight for us at the source. But should they have ever crossed those seas? We are putting their lives at risk everyday, and for what? Even if we do completely change the governmental system there so that the people of the middle east can vote and say what they want, would they appreciate it? For the five years (FIVE YEARS!!) we have been over there fighting, our enemies have just grown to resent us even more. They think we are trying to wipe out their culture. And what do we get out of this? We have spent billions upon trillions of dollars fueling Bush's fight for his daddy. He claims that they have weapons of mass destruction, but if the Afghans or Iraqis were ever going to attack, we are prime for invasion right now, when our military is over there trying to fix their problems. Or is it just about money and war?
I've come to the conclusion, not all is fair in love and war.
