Halloween-where did the costumes go?

Today is Sunday. Which means, all of the ads are in the paper today. I noticed something that I noticed last year as well. Halloween is not what it used to be.

Whatever happened to Halloween being scary? What happened to the blood, guts, gore, death, and monsters? Oh that’s right-we have to be politically correct now. *PUKE*
I look through the ads and what do I see? Either princesses and cartoon characters, lame t-shirts with words on them, or nasty reveal-everything costumes. Halloween USA is one ad that entirely disgusts me. 98% of the costumes in their ads are "sexy" the other two percent? 1 is kids, the other is for larger people.

But honestly. Whatever happened to a scary Halloween? Zombies and mummies, monsters, characters covered in blood, witches, Freddy, Jason, where did it all go?
Since when is Halloween about being a princess? Since when do you dress up as a beer keg for Halloween? Come on. Seriously.

Halloween was SCARY once upon a time. I remember one year-I went as a dead girl scout. My sister went as a dead nurse. It was pretty gruesome, pretty awesome. And now..you see little kids dressed as fairies and princesses. *Said in a petty, childish, lisp.*

Come on! Let’s see it! Bring out the blood! The gore! Where are the open wounds? The dripping blood, down your face, arms, all over you! Ghosts! Spooks! Witches casting spells.
I just want the tradition back. Not to the exact history or Halloween-but the costume idea. Cover up (it’s cold on Halloween where I live...), bring out the blood and guts, put those wings away, same for the glitter and heels. SCARE ME.

When I was going to WWU I went to a church hosted halloween dance and I will never forget this one girl who was dressed as christina agularia form the "dirty" video...she looked just like her. I remember thinking "wow, what has happend to halloween" and furthermore...what has happened to church! lol

oh wow..lol
that i just..wow. sad and wrong..and just..yeah. lol

It's hard to be scary when your main mission is to collect candies from your neighbors. Here you go, zombies--some kisses and hugs.

lol-well i always went trick or treating on the other side of town-mainly because i live in the boonies and you cant do it out here :p
but how is it hard? i find it easier than being 'miss pretty pretty pink glitter princess'

So I know it wasn't on Halloween but your post reminded me of it. On Friday the 13th in Des Moines, IA they had a zombie movie fest and there were tons of kids dressed up as zombies enjoying coffee, comic books, and zombie flicks outside in the freezing cold. It was at Cup of Kryptonite and it was so awesome. I wish all people would get into Halloween like those kids got into their zombie costumes.

see-now THAT is awesome :D
I wish halloween was still that way.

That bothers me too. Everyone is trying to make halloween into something not scarey. I mean some costums for like babies dressed up as say..tigger is cute, but what happened to everything else scarey? Halloween parties aren't much fun anymore because people usually try to out do others. And the costums now a days...hellow its cold out, why go out looking like a hooker? All these "Sexy costums" they are reaching to teenagers and even little kids instead of just adults. And further more, why do they make sexy large people costums? Hell, I'm fat but just cause they make a sexy costum in my size doesn't mean I should wear it. I've seen that a few times with people. Halloween has gone down the gutter =(

Sorry that was soooo disorganized but I'm not really thinking

It wasn't disorganized :p
and yeah! It is to cold-and a lot of it we don't want to see anyway!

I agree, but then again, at times it is fun to dress up like your favorite characters. For me, I love anime and manga and video games. So a couple years ago, my friend and I sewed our own costumes so we could be Yuna and Rikku from Final Fantasy X. No, it wasn't scary, but it was still fun.
But then again, I've never been scared by much of anything. I think part of the problem is that society has become somewhat desensitized to such blood and gore and "scary" things no longer are that scary. Therefore, the main goal of Halloween is to get lotsa candy. Not that I even have time to go trick or treating this year. :(

It is fun-yes-but they have comicons for that (comic book shows), or other events like that to dress up for...and yeah-we have been desensitized to it, but it isn't really "scary" scary, just..it isnt supposed to be pink and purple. It is a time of spooks and all...

In my opinon so much of the fun of Halloween comes with the scary aspect, and like the poster said, much of the fright and horror is gone from halloween.

Yes! :D

The disney corporation and all the cartoon shows want to make a profit manipulating kids into buying these super heroe costumes and princess attire; which their parents like because of the non-violent approach to holloween costumes.

I personaly miss the home-made costumes = (

True.
And I miss the home-made costumes too. I havn't gone trick or treating since I was in 6th grade (7th grade was 9/11 and all the anthrax stuff-they wouldn't let me go), but our costumes were always either homemade, or had one or two parts that were store bought.

yes it is not what it used to be but rember this day is purley comercial any way
it is ment to be the day of the dead the day u honer those who have passed away and such
but we realy dont see it as that
in some religions (peggan ones) this is a religious day

so weather u dress up as a fairy or a dead girl scout the true meaning of the day is being lost

That is true. But I believe I said (I only say believe because I don't 100% remember if I did or not), that i'm not focusing on the history right now. Perhaps I will write another blog with the history.

But this country is so obsessed with being politically correct that they are AFRAID to dress up as something creepy or scary.

"I remember one year-I went as a dead girl scout."

that is so awesome!!!!!
I agree. The thing is, though, I'm not necessarily against being characters or something. I don't have much to work with for costumes so I've dressed up as Buffy (from..well..Buffy) or Maria from Roswell and I kind of want to go as Marla Singer from Fight Club this year (who is a bit more on the scary side....) But I do think that Halloween should be less about bringing sexy back and more about being creative and even being scary if you have the material. Pink not a halloween color, thats for sure.

The characters don't bother me as much as the sexy thing.
I just think they should be about working with what you have, and scarryyyy.
The dead girl scout came about because I had the uniform-and we had bought halloween makeup :p lol
it was cool. Probably one of my favorites that I ever did.
