Troops to Remain in Iraq for Years?

I found this while reading Think Progress. It looks like we may not be standing down as the Iraqis stand up like President Bush has been saying ... forever.

The government always puts out the 'good news' from Iraq. Included is usually the amount of Iraqi troops that are ready to police their own country. The last number I saw was in the hundreds of thousands uniformed, trained police officers. Yet the number of American troops remains the same, unchanged.

And the New York Times says the government is looking into the cost of keeping American troops over in Iraq for "years to come":

Officials say the administration has begun to look at the costs of maintaining a force of roughly 50,000 troops [in Iraq] for years to come, roughly the size of the American presence maintained in the Philippines and Korea for decades after those conflicts.

Doesn't sound to me like standing down at all. How many times will this government lie to the American people? And how long will the American people stand for it?
