So I was doing research about rape when I was writing and article about it and my experiences. I was shocked when I read that there is a only 58% chance of a conviction and 68% chance that the rapist will go to jail. So what's that say to us victims? Yea report it, but there's a high chance that he won't serve time in jail. So our wonderful judicial system will put someone who's a danger to women (or men) back on the streets so he can go out and commit this crime once more. No wonder woman fear reporting it...it's like what's the use if nothing's going to happen to him.
I want to know that my rapist has sitting in jail for what he did to me and most likely other women. It's not right that he could be out there somewhere smirking because he wasnt really punished for it. Law enforcement officals tell women to report being raped, ok we report it and even relive it to testify in court....how will we know that you will put him in jail?? If we can't be sure he'll be punished why even report it, why relive that pain for no reason??
I'm not saying women shouldn't report rape for this reason, I think women should report it despite the small chance of jail time. But I also think the law should be harsher for rapists and other abusers. Shows like Law and Order SVU make it seem like rapist get convicted and go to jail when in reality the statistics show...that's not the truth.....I think it's our responsiblity, not only victims but society to say "hey the law needs to be harsher and these men (and women) need to be convicted and put in jail." We should stand up for each other and do what we can to protect each other from something like rape and abuse.

Well, do you believe that a woman's word is all that is needed to send a man to jail for 30 years?
Well they don't go just on her word. There's other stuff involved like the forensic stuff. I'm saying a rapist should go to jail I mean 68% of a chance that he won't is too high of a chance. and when they do go to jail it's only for like 2-5 years. Should be at least 10---should be the same as child molestors it's the same idea except with children their younger/more vulnerable.

Do those statistics include rapes that go unreported? Or just the ones that make it to trial?
