Why do we judge someone by their looks? We are thought not to “judge a book by its cover,” but yet we all still do. Is society today forgetting that what matters is not the way a person looks, but their intelligence? There are so many young teenage girls out their who starve themselves to death just to look like the “cheerleaders” or “celebrities.” In fact, its not just teenage girls who wish to become sticks, but its young children as well. I have a little cousin, who is six years old, and I could not believe when she said her, “my friend doesn’t eat candy because it makes you fat.” As a six year old child, your not supposed to know what makes you fat and what’s healthy and what’s not, you just eat your little heart out whenever you get the chance to lay a hand on some candy. I realized that children, this young, develop an eating disorder because of the way society is today. It seems as if every adult today is on a never ending diet and when children watch their parents count their calories and weigh themselves six times a day, they begin to follow their parent’s foot steps. It’s not just the parents I blame, I also blame TV commercials and shows because most of the shows we watch only show people who look like supermodels and when teenagers and children watch these shows they begin to want to wonder why they don’t look like that. It is like society today is encouraging young girls to develop a eating disorder. It wouldn’t hurt, just once in a while, to have a magazine cover say, “Just be yourself” instead of “How to lose 10 pounds in 10 days!”
