WHAT IS UP WITH THOSE OUT OF STATE FEES?

I’m a college student. Not only that, I go to college outside of my home state. For those of you who go to college in the state you are from, going out of state of college means having to pay extra fees. Going to college I already have to pay tuition ($2,5000), housing( almost $2,000), a meal plan (almost $900) that I don’t want but am forced to have, and other extra fees that add up to $5,000, but on top of those charges I have out of state fees. Almost $3,000 worth. After these bills, I still need books, school supplies, and other things I might need. Some colleges are even more then that. I just so happen to attend a less expensive college. I don’t know why colleges are so expensive, but I’m more curious about the out of state fees. What are those for? Why do they need them? Is it being used as a deterrent to keep people from leaving their home state for college?

It sounds like you're going to an out of state State college. For example, I hope to attend Arizona State, I'll be paying out of state fees. If I were to attend a private college, I wouldn't have to worry about it.

The public colleges are funded by taxes placed upon citizens of the state the college is located in. If you're from out of state, you haven't been contributing to that fund, therefore you shouldn't be reaping the benefits.

so I have to pay $3000 per semester? I have to pay $24,000(4 years) Why so much? Where do that money go exactly? Why do I have to pay every semester including the summer? You seem to have some information. Can you help me out with answers to these questions?

I have a bit of information as I posed this question to my counselor awhile back.

As a working citizen of CA, one of the many taxes I pay goes to the California State Colleges which goes to help CA citizens attend these public colleges. It helps these students in the form of a lowered tuition. Some people have been living in CA their entire lives, therefore their family has been paying said tax the entire time. If an out-of-state student were to come into CA and expect to get the lowered tax available to CA students, how would that be fair?

I was never told the exact amount the tax is that citizens of a specific state pay, but I'm assuming it's rather large by the exponentially higher tuition. I was told to be sure to establish your citizenship in the state you're going to college. Don't live in a dorm, get a steady job, so on and so forth and maybe, just maybe you might get a semester or so of Residential Tuition.

Thanks for the info

You have to think about the fact that people who live and go to college in the same state pay taxes that help that school. So by going out of state for college you pay extra making up for those taxes. oh sorry i guess someone else posted the same lol
