Mormonism, Mitt, and Make-Believe

Although Romney has now dropped out of the 2008 presidential race, his candidacy definitely put a lot of focus on his religion of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. A lot of Christians do not even think that Mormons are Christians, which is obviously not true – they believe that Jesus Christ is the savior of mankind. Mormons, although they do sometimes seem a bit intrusive trying to win converts, are generally nice people, volunteering to do community work and patriotic public service. Obviously, there are extreme splinter sects, as with any type of religion, as seen by the recent trials of Warren Jeffs, but he can not be seen as the symbol of Mormons.
So is America ready to accept Mormons? Their religion is growing, both domestically and internationally. Romney was an opportunity both for Mormons to explain their faith and for detractors to slander the Mormons. I personally think that Romney’s religion would have nothing to do with his policies if he did become president, and that Americans need to eradicate any sort of religious bias, especially because of separation of church and state. Religions are religions; if somebody thinks that Mormonism is weird, there are plenty of atheists who think that religion as a whole is a complete hoax, and as one of my friends thinks, the biggest marketing scam in the history of mankind.
Americans cannot discriminate or hate Mormons or pretend that they are some foreign people. We need to embrace them, just like we embrace immigrants.
