I currently attend a community college because I cannot afford to attend a university here in my state. Finanical aid is no help whatsoever. Well they just recently uped the tutition rate here in Texas at the University. It's close to 4,000 dollars to attend. (Oh okay, let me pull that four thousand dollars out of my pocket right away) I can't afford that at all and plus the government isn't a great help either. I wanted to go to that university this year coming up but with that dramatic change, it's totally not worth it. Now with the university going up the community college feels that they must blend in. I must say community isn't meant for me, it seems like it's made for the older crowd or just the teenagers that want to slack off. They raised the prices there as well, it was inexpensive before. It was about 600 dollars because they aren't state funded but by the city they raised the tutition to close to one thousand dollars. I don't even recieve free money from the government but money I have to pay back. It's a horrible feeling knowing that by the time your 30 your probably going to be close to 50,000 dollars in debt. (Great feeling huh?)
Anyway lets get to my point, Texas univerisitys have enough money to grant almost half the students that attend there full scholarships but the one I would like to attend only gives one. The way I see it these colleges need to stop being so cheap and giving students what they deserve. I mean I would like to grow up knowing that I don't have to worry about paying back the government the money they gave me for my education. Remember, they want us to go to college and continue our education why are they making it so difficult?
Why is attending college so difficult?

Ever since the Reagan era, funding for post-secondary education (among other things) has been in decline.
It seems radical, but one has to wonder whether the powers that be systematically dissemble financial aid in order to reduce opportunity and promote enrollment in the military.
That's not true. Spending on higher education has increased by 163% over the past 20 years, even though tuition and housing costs have increased by 80%, according to the college board. Subsidization has inflated college costs by giving universities a strong incentive to raise tuition. I wrote a blog about it, here's the link http://www.progressiveu.org/180733-your-mom-goes-to-college-why-should-everyone-and-their-mom-have-to-pay-for-it
I know, It could be completely ridiculous.
yea i know what you mean. the university im gonna be going to is $30,000 a year! and i even with "finacial aid" i still have to some how get ahold of $12,000 by this july in order for me to even attend. i think that we should follow what they do in europe. did u know that in europe that if you have good grades while your in school the government will pay for all college expenses? yea mind boggling right?
no way!!!
I'm moving to europe, no wonder they have a better education then us hah.
I was offered a scholarship to one of the colleges I applied to, Virginia Commonwealth University, for in-state tuition and fees. The school was 20 hours away from my home and didn't have everything I was looking for, so I turned it down to attend the University of Minnesota. They didn't give me anything. Apparently my 3.9 GPA and excessive involvement wasn't good enough for them. Ah well. Bring on the student loans! And then med school...oh geez. I better make like Izzie Stevens and model my way through.
I understand completely!!! It is not fair at all! I don't qualify for financial aid because my "Expected Family Contribution" is too much. Guess how much money my family gives me for college.... none. How much sense does that make?
I hate money. I hate FAFSA...because of my fathers income i dont get federal aid even though my parents arent paying for college. I went in with a 50k college fund to last me 4 years. i got two academic scholarships and a loan from the school, but with room, board, and books im shelling out 10k a semester....im coming up on my fifth semester and after that im unsure how im going to pay for college.

People, students loans aren't that bad, they're some of the best debt you could have. Low interest debt where the interest paid is tax deductible. Plus, pretty much you'll end up earning more in your life because of your college education to pay back your loans with much more to spare.

in my opinion no debt is good debt. and btw, im a music education major. think about it. teacher salary vs. monstrous student loan debt= millions of years trying to pay it back and live at the same time.
