I HATE stereotypes, even if they are proven accurate. It bothers me. I never knew it did until it happened to me. Now I pull back from my unknown stereotyping habit. It doesn't make me feel good inside, therefore I don't want to make others feel like crud. I am an all around good person; I don’t get bugged by much, and I’m pretty much a happy go lucky girl. In short, I don't get mad easily. but my biggest annoyance is when people think that just because i'm black I’m "ghetto." First of all, why use a Nazi torture camp as slang for "gangsta" or "cool black person" ITS DUMB! Second I don’t' like to be stereotyped that way. We are all our own person, no matter what color skin we have, or what culture we come from. Not all Asians are valedictorian, and a lot of them rebel against there parents. Not all Hispanics are illegal immigrants "taking over our workforce." Not all white people are rich and stuck up etc. People are what they make of themselves, not what ethnicity they.
I'm a dancer; have been for 14 years now, and have stuck with the same studio all those years. I joined the Company in 6th grade. The majority of our dance company is black. Our dance teacher is very proud of that, and wants more of us. In fact we have a black history show that we put on every year. However, as the majority, I’m expected of certain "dance quality." I'm supposed to be the "ghetto" girl who can hip-hop. Well first off, some of that stereotype is WAY over the top. Secondly I dont have to be "ghetto" to be a good dancer, i can just be a good dancer, and a sweet person. I dont' have to be intimidating or whatever. But my teacher is always COMPARING me to the "white girls" and how they're "blacker" then me. She constantly reminds me that i'm the whiter then the white people. Just because i'm not good at hip-hop or "ghetto" they decide to make fun of me. At first I just went with it, but now i'm getting really pissed. I don't want to be stereotyped i want to be ME.
I don't want to be in the shadow of all other "black" people, i want to be my own person, no matter what ethnicity, culture, religion etc. I hate being CLASSIFIED. I don't want to be like the rest, I want what I want, and nothing else. I find it really offensive to be stereotyped that way. I hate when people tell me "Your so white" what is white anyway? Its the absence of color. Does that mean i'm absent of character and personality? NO i'm me, a soul on the inside, no matter how I look, or DANCE on the outside. I'm a human being of the planet earth, with a body and soul of my own. We may be differnent physically but eternally we all have hopes, dreams, and asspirations. We all want to create a life for ourselves that we love. So why judge eachother when were all the same?

Wow, your teacher should not be doing that. That could be classified as harassment based on race, and it's illegal. Have you tried talking to her one-on-one and letting her know that you're offended, and that she is encouraging the types of discrimination that many Africans have fought hard to disprove?

I dont' think i have the courage for that. I only have a month left with her. I think I can dish it out a little longer. But thanks.
you really shouldn't let that bother you, people have a right to be racist just like we have a right to choose not to be racist. and without stereotypes we wouldn't have any culture, for example, we say that baseball is America's past time but I as an american don't like baseball, but does it bother me when we refer to baseball as that? no of course not,
nothing wrong with having culture nothing wrong with having traditional views on how different people are, and if you want to have them then fine and if you don't then thats cool to, I think part of being open minded is being objective about stereo types and enjoying them as a part of the sillyness of the human condition.
The bad thing about a stereotype is that it isn't true, and therefore promotes misconceptions and hate towards others. Saying things like all blacks are gang members, all indians are drunks, all whites are rednecks, or all mexicans in the US are illegals causes hatred towards each group as a result of those negative misconceptions.
We can have culture without stereotypes. Baseball was labeled as America's pasttime during an era when baseball actually was one of the biggest sources of entertainment. Pointing out positive things or even negative truths is acceptable, but exaggerating and making up negative or positive traits is not being objective or "silly" at all- it's ignorant. Definitely not progressive.
