Another Essay I wrote for a scholarship. Tell me what you think.
“Volleyball is the sport through which I am able to express my God given talents of being an athlete. It is a sport which involves relating, and encouraging your teammates. It has helped me evolve into the person I am today.”- David Beard. I can relate to this quote in so many ways. The hard work, friendship and teamwork that come from playing volleyball has changed me forever.
Playing volleyball has taught me many things about hard work. Working hard isn’t just about physically working hard but also mental strength. Imagine that it’s Friday night, your team is ten points behind, your whole body hurts from the several times you’ve dove on the floor, but you still push through your physical fatigue and at the end of the game when your team wins you get a great feeling of accomplishment and all of your pain slips away. That’s just one of many examples of how volleyball has taught me the importance of hard work.
Not only has volleyball taught me about hard work but it’s also taught me about teamwork. I’m a firm believer in the saying “Teamwork Makes the Dream Work”. It’s extremely rare that a team will ever win if there are only one or two main players. It’s a collaboration between all of the team member’s abilities that lead to a successful season. For example this past volleyball season we got a new coach. After the previous season’s highlight of making it to the state tournament for the first time in Wishkah volleyball history we all, fans and players alike were expecting a great season but unfortunately our new coach choose favorites and our team crumpled because of it causing very few wins.
Volleyball has not only showed me the importance of hard work and teamwork but it has greatly impacted my life by causing me to build strong friendships with my teammates. Wishkah is a small school and small community. We’ve all grown up together and everybody knows everything about everybody but to be able to see those people in a different environment and to all be working towards the same goal has greatly bonded us. At the end of high school I know I will miss my teammates more then I will anybody else.
Volleyball is more then just a sport to me. It is a way of live. It’s taught me the importance of hard work, teamwork, friendship and many other things. It has changed my life in more ways then I can even explain in words. Not only volleyball but all sports define people. It shapes your character and changes your life forever. The pain and hard work you go through only makes you stronger. I wish I could show that to every person possible. I wish I could explain to them how one little thing such as a sport can not only change your life but save it.
