Happiness Only Real When Shared

What is it that makes people happy? Is it something that can be bought or sold? The drug pushers and the advertisers would tell you a resounding yes. I on the other hand, firmly believe in the contrary.

Happiness is such a tricky little thing to capture - here one minute and then gone the next. What thrills one person can scare or anger another. Just think of all the little things that make you happy and lift your spirits. Would those things work with other people in your life? Perhaps it's seeing your partner first thing in the morning, drinking that first cup of coffee, feeling the sunshine on your skin, or getting a high grade on your last History test. Sure, these things could appeal to many people and they certainly appeal to me, but sure as you're born there's somebody else who hates coffee and prefers the rain.

Maybe happiness is something truly simple and unexplainable; not a thing which can truly be defined or determined or truly touched. You can touch a tree, your lover, your child and a million other things that can bring you happiness. Can you ever touch happiness itself? Perhaps happiness is much like the wind - that which is felt but cannot be seen or kept.

In relation to the actual title of this blog, I must agree with this statement too. One can find events that go on in their lives to bring them moments of joy and elation, but those feelings fade rather quickly. I find that only when one can share in these joyous occasions are they not only felt more strongly, but their memory lasts longer and can be shared and enjoyed time and again. I don't think anyone who has felt the pain of loneliness can say that they were ever truly happy for any lengthy period of time. Being alone at times is necessary, but if for too long, then it just becomes a burden on you...

In short - find what makes you happy and hold on to it, revel in it and enjoy it. And by all means, don't be afraid to share it with someone else. Make it real and make it last. We all deserve to be happy.

The title and inspiration for this blog post came after watching the film "Into the Wild", which I highly recommend :)...

- staying in bed all morning, being lazy, just cuddling with my partner
- riding my motorcycle on a sunny, 70 degree day... to nowhere in particular
- taking my nephew to the movies and seeing both him and my partner laugh out of their chairs at the fart joke.
- taking in a good punk rock show with an ice cold PBR, or any good show
- getting a phone call from a friend I hadn't talked to in months
- laughing
- making someone smile
- getting and giving a heartfelt "I love you," just because
- random acts of kindness
- hugs, just because
- going out to dinner with old and new friends

That's what I came up with in a couple of minutes. It made me smile. Thank you!

All those things sound very fun and enjoyable - some of them would certainly make me happy too ^_^.

I'm always glad to be able to put a smile on somebody's face :). You are very welcome! ^_^

Hey! How funny, I just wrote a blog about "Into the Wild" also! We definitely have different focuses, but coincidental nonetheless! I enjoyed reading yours, with a focus on happiness (mine was a bit more pessimistic and related to my opinions of the protagonist's actions).

I agree that happiness is hard to define, describe and understand. Also, it is different for everyone and each individual has their own journey towards finding happiness.

How very synergistic! (I hope I used that word properly ^_^) Yeah, I just read that too. I thought, "Huh, I just wrote something related to Into the Wild myself - what a coinkydink".

I really liked your blog too. It expressed a lot of the same things that I felt while watching his story as well. I guess I just got inspired in a different way :).

I finished watching Into the Wild about 15 minutes before reading this. I agree it is an amazing movie. :-) And your blog is full of truth.

It's funny how life works out that way. I was actually writing part of that blog while I was watching the film, but didn't finish until after the movie. It was rather moving :).

And thank you very much ^_^.

Your picture is very cute by the way. It reminds me of that creature from Pan's Labyrinth. :D
