minimum wage, maximum pain

rachael_alexi's picture

I write this as I setlle into home after work. I get paid minimum wage at Burger King. I just got hired there. For the most part it's a pretty quiet resturant, I'm one of the only girls who dares to work there. It's mostly teenage boys who go to the same school as me and I've never ever seen them. I was put to work last night, tonight, and tomorrow night. Today the scehdule for next week (starting this friday) came out. I saw that not only do I work Friday night, but Saturday and Sunday night as well. 6 FREAKING NIGHTS IN A ROW! I should really feel lucky that it's a pretty slack job and lucky that they hired me especially since the mall now doesn't want to hire 17 years olds.

I feel like quitting, but before coming to a rash decision lets look at the pros and cons
pro:it's close to home
pro: its a job
pro: its slack

Con time
con- MINIMUM WAGE
con- LIFE SUCKERS!
con-continuos eating of gresy foods and future heart attack

I've worked in the mall before. I got paid 7.50 and it was my favorite store. I cant really remember why i quit, but I do regret it. They don't even put their full time people to work 6 nights a week.

Perhaps the food industry is not so much for me

Good for you. Talk about sustainable. Does that mean you can ride yer bike to work, save on fuel, use that money on something you're passionate about, remain healthy and feel good about yer impact on our Earth (all at once)?

lol not exactly. By close to home I mean 8 minutes away by car. I already have a car that I have to pay insurance for.

Interesting logic: I already payed for my car insurance--now I need to use it. That type of thinking might not fly so well in the future, what with gas prices what they are. Fortunately for you, I can empathize...

I'm having the same set of issues. My Pa renewed the insurance on my VW bus as a graduation present. Unfortunately he presents me with a moral dilemma.

I didn't motivate myself to insure the damn contraption because I wanted to encourage a more sustainable lifestyle. You know, walking and biking to most ventures around town. But now... he's spent money and I'm expected to bring in a return on his investment. I digress though. That's a mighty big problem on yer hands...

Burger king how of the quarda stack burger? I always love the signs they have for that stuff in the midst of the obesity crisis... would you like taht super sized??

I worked at jack in the box...it was alot of fun after the first few days.

I say sell the car drop the insurance payments and ride an awesome bike to work off your Burger king...I am pretty sure those fumes clog your arteies just as fast as actually consuming the products ;)

That car was a graduation present and I would never sell that thing. The only way I would sell it is if I got a new one. And unfortunatly I don't live in a small town where biking to where you need to go in just a small disadvatage. I live in a huge concrete city where non-fast food resturants, friends, and job oppotunities are over 8 miles away. biking would basically give me a small heart attack or heat stroke in the summer.

I live in a small town that is now on average over one hundred degrees. The closest anywhere is over ten miles with no resting points. I could just see my kids keeling over on the way to a park on our bikes. We do our best though.

Trust me there are jobs that are much worse even when you make more pay. I work at Target and get 7.81 an hour. I lift 100lb objects sometimes because I work in the back. i climb ladders all day. I hate it. I like that it gets me in shape, but I don't like the fact that I feel off a ladder and I am treated like a low life compared to the people on the sales floor. I have worked at Waffle House as well it is bad. Target is my second worse job.

I would stay for now since it is so close to your house. If you do decide to leave have another job first before you do leave. I learned this the hard way.

I know the smart thing is to have another job lined up, but I am basically miserable. At my previosu job I didnt feel as forced to go as I am now. Another con is that all the employess speak spanish...fluently...slang and all. All I know are the basics and some conversation, so they basically use this to their advantage and make fun of me...

That is wrong. Well I understand you urgency, but I just know from doing it and have been unemployed for 3-4 months each time. With the economy bad because of our wonderful president....it was hard to find a job. If you don't have alot of bills and don't need alot of money then go for it. If you have bills and such then I wouldn't. Of course I understand, I just want to save you from being jobless and broke. The spanish would get on my nervous, but I know it some what. I never let spanish speaking people know that though. :)
