Subliminal Messages...Is it MIND CONTROL?

Have you ever noticed the naked lady on the drink machine?

No? Most people don't notice her, but she's there. Take a look at your nearest coca cola drink machine... the ice on the big coca cola can is formed in the shape of a woman.

Or what about the sexual messages in the Disney movies?  In 'Aladdin' when the tiger is growling, if you have the proper equipment, you can hear a really low voice saying "Good teenagers, take off your clothes." There are other instances of Disney workers getting bored and messing with the movies. In the 'Lion King', when Simba is crying for his dad, and he looks in the sky, the stars roughly spell out SEX. Disney has encountered lawsuits for the messages in their cartoons.

In a Camel cigarette ad, it shows a pack of cigarettes on a sandy Saudi Arabian desert. Look carefully, you'll see that the word SEX is etched into the sand several times. Not that you would ever see them without looking for them, but it's there.

It's scary to think about all the stuff our brain is exposed to on a daily basis, from all the unconscious messages we receive.

So do you think Subliminal messages are good or bad? If used to promote something pisitively I think it's somewhat alright, but it's too close to hypnotizing or brainwashing someone so i wouldn't suggest it.

There has been research and some sources say that subliminal messages have little, if any affect on behavior. I believe that with the increase in exposure the more it is likely to have some affect on your behavior. For instance if you see sexual content on tv everyday, hear it in songs, and receive loads of subliminal messages then it's likely you are going to want to have sex...and probably go have sex.

I knew about the Lion King thing but those others are shocking, its crazy!

And there's actually much more from different sources.

Um, if you can reach unresolved anxiety, etc., by using subliminal images and audio effects, you might get a trauma-based response based upon a mild dissociative state. This is what happens with some TV commercials - they stress you with death images (skulls, etc.), then the images vanish when the product is shown or is used in the commercial. It's what the behaviorists call "pain avoidance" and is one of the more powerful methods to manipulate. That's why torture is so effective. Except that the subliminal method has the advantage of staying at the subconscious level: you might not feel anything except slipping into a mild trance.
Check out the sleaze for hire on the 'net sometime: i mean the "seduction software" garbage that's out there. They proudly list trauma-based induction techniques as part of their arsenal and sholud be in jail.

When my Mom was working on her PHD in Anthropology at Harvard I met BF Skinner. I was just a little kid. He was kind of scary to meet and was more scary after Mom explained his work.

I saw a piece on a video called, "Mind Control Goes Public" - I know, it sounds like a bunch of nutters looking for the limelight, but there are many credible sources on this one, such as Mr. Ted Gunderson, retired FBI.
The piece I mean describes B.F.Skinner's treatment of his own children, specifically, his experimentation on them. If this treatment of his kids were reported in the Times today, he would get slapped in prison, for sure. And it's probably not a coincidence that both of his children committed suicide in ther twenties.
I guess my point is that just because something works is not a good enough idea to use it. You never know what kind of psychological or emotinal damage you might do to someone, and it's all hidden in the depths of their minds.

Another snippet I just picked up about B F Skinner is that he had a heavy influence on the Pentagon during the Vietnam war. He taught that people are just biological objects, and can be conditioned beyond their ability to resist, so they bombed Vietnam, and bombed, and bombed some more, hoping that the merciless pummeling would break them down. BUT - we all have a free will and the ability to freely stand against an enemy, no matter how unpleasant the circumstances.
If you think about it, we lost the Vietnam war because our military leaders refused to believe in the human soul.
Pitiful!

I acutally find these quite funny... It amuses me that people have the time to go through all these media aspects and find the messages. These may actually be affecting us subconsciously and we would never know it! Wow.

kaylaosteen3's picture

I agree with you I find them funny and interesting ...not really quite sure why but it is humorous to me. I still cannot quite grasp the fact of why they would affect us subconsciously.

They are funny, that's true. But they are a form of mind control, too, and that's why I am against them. I don't like to know that somebody makes jokes on my mind!

ITs not just the Lion King , but also in the movie "The little Mermaid". The original covers showed the city underwater but the poles weren't just poles they were penis' at that!!!So if you have the oldest little Mermaid movie Classic then look closely and you'll see it!!!

I heard the reason for the little mermaid 'issue' was caused by one of the artists who was going to be fired; this was their form of 'revenge'. I don't remember where I found that.

Yep yep, that's true.

There was a much less subtle case in which a naked woman appeared in a window for two full frames (a small fraction of a second), in the movie...hmm... The one with the rodent who travels around the country on the back of a seagull. hah :p

The Rescuers? Or Rescuers down under... or something... Haha.

Totally. I think... >_O hah

haha yeah I saw those. You can imagine what kind of people would do these do children's movies

Hidden, subconsciously recognized material is a key part of a lot of advertising. It's kind of like performing a magic trick: you, as the magician, know exactly what you're doing and what clever slights of hand you're using to fool your onlooker. But to the onlooker, your performance is amazing and miraculous. When we have the desire to do something or buy a product, we oftentimes don't know why, and that could be because the reason never hit our consciousness.

"Subliminal messages" certainly screw around with personal freedom, but they're not always intentional. For example, what sometimes happens to me while I'm studying is I'll see a term without realizing it and somehow "just know" it a few minutes later. In reality, I probably caught a glimpse of it without recognizing it. Or sometimes I'll have heard a song once before without knowing it, and I'll feel that odd sense of deja vu when I know the melody and the words ~ because the only other time I'd heard it, I hadn't been paying conscious attention.

Your brain actually picks up a lot of what's going on in the world around you without you becoming conscious of it. I can't say how much is subconsciously remembered, because I've recently read about a few cases where direct brain stimulation gave rise to incredibly detailed descriptions of things that should not have been known in such detail (memories from very early childhood and things of the like). I also can't comment on whether or not these memories affect us or not, but on a hunch I'd have to agree with you and say that repeated stimulation makes stimulus-driven behaviors more probable. Who knows ~ maybe I've seen the data before and just think it's a hunch. ;)

There is NO evidence to suggest that subliminal messages have ANY effect on consumer behavior. There's a good summary of the research in Consumer Behavior by Michael Solomon... unfortunately I'm 750 miles away from my library and can't get the exact page numbers.

Mythbusters also did an episode on this. It was pretty hilarious.

There is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come.

Has anyone seen Josie and the Pussycats? It's more on the extreme (and slightly unbelievable) side... But it's the first thing that popped into my head... People controlling the latest fashions and "hot" items through subliminal messages in music, movies, etc.

kaylaosteen3's picture

yeah, the first thing it reminded me of was a Simpons episode where all the boys are made into a boy band by the U.S. Navy to enlist.

I like this kind of stuff. Anyone know of any sites that has a whole bunch of them listed? I'm curious to see how many exist and maybe discover a few of my own.

I can't cite my sources because I haven't had this debate in years, but I'm pretty sure I've come across research results that said subliminal messages don't have an impact on the consumer.

That being said, I think subliminal messages are funny.

All basis of belief in subliminal messages comes from a single, fraudulent study done by a quack of a scientist in the 70's. I heard this from a college professor. SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES DON'T EXIST. They're an urban legend.

And what benefit would there be to putting subliminal messages about sex into kid's movies? Those things are either there by accident or to amuse adults like us, so that we'll go rent and watch the movie.

where did youg et this from. where is your source

have you see the lion king or aldean

I think subliminal messages exist but i thhink the disney movie ones are just chance.I see no reason why Walt Disney would wnat to do that in his movies the company already makes way more than enough money so they dont need to increase sales or anything.geeze.I wnat to make self-subliminal messages for me that i can put in my music or something to motivate me:D

i heard somewhere that walt disney was a manic depressant. Although he loved children thats why he did what he did for kids but that dosen't change the sickness he had. Has anyone ever sat down and listened to the nursery rhymes like rock-a-by baby, or humpty dumpty??? Those songs are crazy, everyone dies in them.

nataliegwishiri's picture

ring around the rosies too; i was playing with my little cousins who are 2 and 4 and i was thinking about when my teacher said that song was talking about the Beubonic Plague. it's crazy what we sing and don't even know what we're singing.

how sick.

maybe these are the reasons kids are having sex at such an early age???

nataliegwishiri's picture

i was watching the discovery channel and they were showing ads at the movies and how they have subliminal messages so that you will go and buy snacks. i believe it to that point.

Lol incase you also didnt know, walt disney was a nazi who made nazi propaganda films. Theirs alot of cartoons you can find that are nazi propaghanda. Also every year over 1000 children mysteiously vanish from walt disney world. The ceo and executives of the walt disney corporation are also members of the bohemian grove group a group of elite buisness men bankers entertainers and politicians, it is common amung them to practice homosexuality, pedophilia and in a climactic ritual know as the "sacrafice of CARE" they burn a "effigy" of a child to a huge owl named moloch the god of human sacrafice, some beleive the effigy is a real child. Also if you look at the Walt Disney signature their is clearly a 666 in it 6 in the W 6 in the D and 6 in the y also, the walt disney trademark signature was not walt disneys real signature, it was a logo designed for him by the illuminati who walt disney himself was a member of. I know a girtl whos grandma dated walt disney and almost married him she states that walt disney was a maniac and a pervert. Alot of Walt disney movies are riddled with satanic images and plotlines im not a right wing evangelist christian im not even a christian, i studie alot of the paranormal and have done alot of research into many of these characters, walt disney and the corporation do intentianlly slip in heavy images and audio clips telling children to do things, alot of movies and compaies and ads do. As for subliminal messaging well the nazis first discovered you can brainwash people sneaking in things into their ads, it only took them 15 years to accomplish that goal. So after about 60 years of mind conditioneing this is the product of their achievement us. While most popular scholars debate that subliminal messaging has no effect on human behaviour .... i would weight the evidence, its well know the nazis used subliminal messaging to their public... look what they where like. It is true that pepsi coke disney basically any ad or major companiy uses sex and other words like FUCK , DIE AND KILL in their add... and look how we turned out, it is well know that child birth rates have sky rocketed and child sexual awarness has skyrocketed in the past 20 years.

oh my gosh, like thats sooooo sick. the 1st time i herd about this was yesterday by my friend elisabeth. did you know theres one in pocahontas too? yah when they are running through the woods and roll, in the sun flowers in black letters it says S-E-X. isnt it grose in all those other disney movies too. but it doesnt say on the internet about the pocahontas one. i hate these people now. they r so gay.

"they r so gay." I resent that, I'm sure if you use that in your every day language you'd be hurting a whole lot of people. Secondly, it's been proven that there's no subliminal message in the sunflowers, even if you do see anything it's not put there intentionally. So, first, I think the "gay" bit needs to be taken out of your language because although I'm not gay I think it's a horrible thing to say in this type of context, secondly, make sure you're doing your own reasearch, not taking the word of a friend.

i think you people are a bit stupid.get a life. subliminal messages in music dont exist so there!!

is sex all u can think about?

there are many subliminal messgaes in disney movies and alot of them are not listed on the internet, its also true that in walt disneys signaure it spells out 666. When i first found out about the hidden clips i was shocked and discusted because i have watched those movies since i was a kid and i let my children watch them and there is nothing i can do to stop it. Its sick how they would acually sneak those things in a childrens movie and whats worse is if it acually does have an effect on our minds.

The problem with "subliminal" messages is that they're literally "below the threshold," meaning that, 40% and lower of the time, a person will not even have a sensation. Thus, it follows that the person cannot perceive anything--there is nothing to perceive. With this knowledge, one can assume that "subliminal" messages cannot, in the main, work. There may be a very, very occasional subconscious blip, but this is so rare and so small that it hardly registers.

If one wishes to have an example, there was some TV show that told its audience (live and at home) that they were going to test a subliminal message on them. At the end, it was found out that many people said they felt hungry or thirsty. Unfortunately, the message was to make a phone call, not to get food or a drink. Because the audience was accustomed to associating subliminal messages with buying food or drinks, they produced that kind of reaction. It was not of the message's doing.

Then we have cases of backmasking. With bottom-up processing, one tries to perceive something with little pre-known sensation; with top-down processing, one has some information that one can make sense of. When someone attempts to listen to a song backwards, not knowing what the supposedly imbedded, possibly Satanic, message is, he most likely will not find it. As soon as someone tells him what to hear, he can hear it. Even with backmasking, so-called "subliminal" messages fail.

Edit: I'd also like to add a note on hypnosis. During one experiment I saw on TV, several young people were in a room with a man who specialized in things like hypnosis. The man made them an array of things, including talking to shoes like friends, biting into an imaginary pear but having their mouth miss, acting like a pop star, etc. but one thing was truly fascinating: when Girl 1 told Girl 2 to take money from a wallet and give it to her, Girl 2 had started to do it, but at some point, she stopped and said, "I don't think it's right." Such an occurrence implies that, even under hypnosis, if we have a certain kind of morality programmed into us, we don't automatically drop it. In this sense, hypnosis as mind control can only go so far.

"Freedom of press is limited to those who own one."

sigh..There is really no such thing as subliminal messageing well technically yes but it has been proven that sumbliminal messages have no effect what so ever. unless you are told to look for somthing or listen for it you would never be effected. as a child when watching aladdin did you all of a sudden take off you clothes? or did you after watchign the lion king parade around the house saying "sex sex" no becuase your brain did not bothering taking in the information...there is a difference between advertising and subliminal messaging.

Bucky Cat

As others have said, subliminal messages have never shown to have any effect on behavior. They are a myth, an urban legend.

Subliminal messages--for those who don't know--are not consciously recognized. It was proposed (and is still a widely held view) that they might have an effect on behavior but this has never been scientifically demonstrated.

bigk's picture

subliminal messages mean nothing. they're created by people with too much time on their hands and found by people with too much time on their hands.

What happens is the message embeds itself in your mental channels and just lies there dormantly, then it pops back up in your mind when a situation arises that causes the brain to flip a trigger saying "Ah, I remember this." The message is then unconsciously brought from the lower subconscious levels and blossoms into a conscious thought, which you think is your own but is really a memory. Our society is much more interesting than what you see at face value. Remember Jesus, comrades. He said you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.

Read through all these comments. No one has even NOTICED the messages hidden in movies or adds. Most people aren't going to notice them either. I honestly don't care if Walt Disney had mental problems or whatever. The movies are a part of practically everyones childhood! You didn't notice anything wrong when you watched when you were a kid so why are you going to trip out now just because you know the word SEX is spelled out somewhere in your movie. Is it really that important to go look for it? People make their own decisions. I know in music subliminal messages MAY have an affect on some people but I don't think that looking at the word sex is gonna make you want to go out and get laid asap.
~Jasmine~

it is so amazing how many subliminal messages are exposed to every day, not only in movies but also everyday television shows, commercials, etc.

Can anyone say stoned? I do believe they are there but you know what? Anyone who really takes their time to find things wrong with cartoons or what is on a pack of ciggerates is probably missing the message. There's no reason for Disney Animators to create these graphics besides the possibility of them being bored and adding to that, do you think they intently put them in there? Not, because they have too many time constraints and they also have to stay under budget, seriously? They're cutting into their own pay if they put something like that intentionally into an animation, Disney gets sued, animators wadges go down, prices in the parks go up. So intentionally putting these things into animation is crap, period. Secondly, the thing about the Tiger growling, is a load of crap, that would take hours to do and they fine-tune any audio before it's put out on the screen. Seriously? It probably doesn't work that well unless you're actually looking for these messages.

And in responce to the Nazi comment above, seriously, the man was not a Nazi and that comment has no validity to it. Secondly, the story you wrote about has also been said about the Catholic church and Pope John Paul. It's not even close to true, do some research before you comment on these things. The paranormal, I'm sure, doesn't want anything to do with Disney.
