I read a post earlier that discussed the way that media affected our lives. While I do agree with this I can not say that I blame the media for all of our problems. Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, and Vanessa Hudgens are all seen as bad role models by different people for different reasons. However when they became celebrities they did not do it in hopes of being a role model, they did it because that was their dream (yes I am assuming this, but I think you understand what I am trying to say). So when I read about how the media is the cause of teen pregnancies, kids doing drugs and drinking, I have to disagree and stand up for these "celebrities" who never really asked to be a role model. I also wonder, if we are so easily affected by how these people live their personal lives whose fault that is. Why are we so easily impressionable? I grew up in an open household. I was never told I could not watch a show, while some of my friends were not allowed to watch rugrats. If I had a question about sex, I would not be afraid to ask, however at 16 years old, my friends can not tell their parents they have boyfriends. I think that a big issue with youth isn’t media, it’s the fact that we are being hidden from the media. I believe that with an open relationship media does not affect the way children turn out. So as much as I understand that children can be easily affected by what their hero of the day Vanessa Hudgens did in her spare time, I also believe that if we learn to be open about issues affecting the these girls and stop having so many secrets and making so many rules, we will learn that it really isn’t the media's fault. Im not in any way trying to imply that people who grew up in a protective household turned out bad, but I also know that as a person who grew up with media in her life, that I did not turn out bad either.
Thanks for reading. Feel free to let me know your opinion too.
