Hello everybody. I thought this would be a good article to be read about Clinical Depression and Addiction (this article mostly talks about depression and will talk about addiction later). You can go to helpguide.org for more information about depression. Tell a friend.----------------
Welcome back, everyone. As you know, this site is all about collaborative articles about all kinds of adversity, misfortune, etc., then making a "positive remark" or aiming to resolve the problems by talking about it. It can be done in any form: discussion, debate, email, reading articles like this...whatever. For the first time ever, I will discuss world-renowned people who will pique your interest to this site: CELEBRITIES.
My site is not going to be centered around celebrities, but may use them as fair examples. I don't aim to gossip about or bad-mouth them, but rather address the problem, pray, and then move on. So... the first thing I'm going to talk about is clinical depression, and then addiction. Listen carefully, world-- "Go and tell it."
Clinical depression is another name for "major depressive disorder" or "unipolar depression." It is a state of intense despair, sadness, distraughtness, advanced enough to the point where all activities performed before the depression stage come to "a screeching halt." It has become the #1 mental disorder and the 2nd most disabling condition in the world behind heart disease. It is growing at an alarming rate, and that rate has
got to drop through the authority of Jesus--He does save! Signs of depression may be
weight loss/gain, insomnia or hypersomnia, suicide attempts, concentration difficulties, delusions, etc. It affects about 7-18% of the American population before reaching 40. The National Institute of Mental Health says that 1 in 10 American adults--or 21 million people--go through or hide depression. In some countries it is even higher, like Australia for example, which has 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men in depression.
I will give more information on depression in the next article, but for now, I want to give a few names of those who had, or is currently, dealing with depression: Sheryl Crow, Jim Carrey, Harrison Ford...that I know of. There are pro- football players, basketball players, and other actors and businesspeople dealing with these problems. It tends to set them back from their everyday endeavors. Again, I want to address the problems of depression. There are so many websites that talk about these kind of problems; I took information from sources and COLLABORATED them here so that you won't have to "surf the net." Isn't that
convenient?....
God bless you and let's rid depression and addiction from the hurting...

Overall good post but...
"It is growing at an alarming rate, and that rate has got to drop through the authority of Jesus--He does save!"
Each case of depression is unique and "Jesus" isn't the solution for everyone, even though it might work for you. Thats all :)

...so we're supposed to sit around twiddling our thumbs waiting for Jesus to do something? I don't think so.
Thats exactly what I was trying to say. O.o

Yes, I should've made my own postie instead of replying to yours. XD
Yup...for some people, it works very actively through prayer. Visible changes on a particular person prayed for can be seen. For others, it's zilch because prayer simply does not apply to them; they don't pray, so why should prayer work for them anyway, you know? So, in the natural, action has to be put forth into REALLY trying to rid depression and addiction instead of laughing and giggling at the TV. Nothing gets done by sitting and bickering.

p.s. Could you maybe try to comment on clinical depression and addiction? I wasn't expecting the "Jesus--He does save" part.Thanks.

Then you shouldn't have put it in your original blog. It's one thing to talk about prayer as it relates to clinical depression and addiction, and another to make that assertion and imply that we should just wait around for a miracle.

mvenus is right. You didn't propose prayer as a form of therapy, you suggested that Jesus would save. Prayer and a faith in any kind of God can provide solice and comfort to many people, as can lifestyle changes, meditation, breath work, medication and a host of other things.
I suffered from despression for three years and in the end it was the SSRI medication Lexapro that helped me the most. For many people praying to some higher power and relaxing their grip on cold hard reality works. For me facing up to reality simply had to be part of my dealing with depression.
Many people will tell you that simple changes in lifestyle, diet, etc will help greatly. Many of these same people are also very much against the use of SSRI medication. However in my experience, none of the people who suggested this approach ever suffered from real depression. When you suffer from depression, the idea of making large structural changes to your lifestyle is so daunting that it seems near to impossible.
Apathy is a huge feature of depression that too many anti SSRI activists overlook. SSRI's allowed me to lift myself up and then make the changes to my lifestyle I needed to in order to change my life to a point where I no longer needed medication. SSRI's are like a boost, but unfortunately too many people who are prescribed them view them as a cure, when the are merely a facilitator. The cure comes from a host of different things combined.
I don't like the idea of religious organisations preying on people with depression. It is exploitation of the sick at a point when they are at their weakest. Exploiting mental illness to draw people into churches is just wrong. It would be more in your line to suggest less meta-physical approaches to dealing with depression, and suggesting that once they have their mental health back to look into joining the Christian massive, you know, when they are no longer actually mentally ill and can make a decision with a clear head.

"Con artists make money through deception. They lie, cheat and fool people into thinking they've happened onto a great deal or some easy money, when they're the ones who'll be making money. If that doesn't work, they'll take advantage of our weaknesses -- loneliness, insecurity, poor health or simple ignorance. "
