Smoking our way to oblivion...

Ah yes, walking into a class room on campus you can tell exactly when your 25 feet from the door.  Maybe it's the sign, or perhaps the small crowd, or the tepid grey blue fumes hanging in the air. Yes ladies and gentlemen it's the 'smoking zone' that small bit of ground that those addicted to Nicotene call 'home'.  Sure they've seen the surgeon general's warnings, the plethora of posters taped to the walls of the student affairs office.  Arguably one or two of them have seen or known people as they were eaten alive by lung cancer a disease caused in in 92 % of the people who get it, but either the cigarette smoke they mean to inhale, or the cigarette smoke that pervades their place of residence due to an addicted family member.  Yet still they stand there and smoke.

Our society is one of contradictions.  Smoking is bad.  It kills people, we have overwhelming evidence to support this fact, yet still we not only allow cigarette companies to manufacture and sell cigarettes'--but we allow them to target their marketing at young people.  Letting an entirely new generation become dependant on what is simply a socially acceptable drug.  Even our military--an organization that has the power to completely control the lives of it's members, does nothing to limit or even warn soldiers (men and women who are giving us their service and lives) of the dangers of smoking.

LSD is illegal, heroin is illegal, marijuana (which is not physically addictive and causes no cancers) is illegal, why is smoking nicotine laced cigarettes ok?

Not only is it legal, yet despite everything we know about the danger's each and every one of us puts up with smoking in some aspect of our lives.  It's socially acceptable.  Lung cancer is seen as a sorrow, but not a preventable problem, when in reality it may be the most easily defeated cancer of our time.
But instead of recognizing this, we're simply continuing along that same path, smoking, or allowing ourselves, our families, our friends, our neighbors, to be 'smoked' into oblivion.

Drinking is also--in a way--unhealthy, but people of all ages do it anyway.

I don't know why people smoke the cancer sticks. Smoking is the most disgusting habit to me. I hate having to hold my breath on my way to class because everyone around me is smoking. Drinking is very unhealthy because so many people abuse it. As young people continue to binge drink we will start to see more and more cases of cancer and diseases of the liver. No one thinks about that though after the 5th drink.

So true. The smell is so horrible. And true both are equally as wrong. But of course if they see someone drinking in school, they will throw them out. But if they smoke in the face of students, they keep on their way. Which evil is greater? Smoking when you are with others. Drinking when you drive

they both critical..some ppl might say drinking when you drive because it causes crashes and take away someone life..so does smoking..not the crash part obviously..or is it?? the chemicals in your body cant fight any more..so they give up and cancer takes over. I hate it when ppl who smoke pass by me wit they damn cigarrettes in they mouths..blow dat shit in ma face an i'll knock you out..cuz am not gon die for nobody..second hand smoke is much more dangerous than first hand. Smoking is a bad habit to take up and a hard habit to break.

Good. Then maybe they'll stop breathing down our necks and start chasing after those binge drinkers instead.

you are so right

Yes, with all the information on the effects of smoking, us the young so called intelligent people that we are are still thinking that dying of lung cancer is okay if we look hip!

Well, for those of you who don't know this, if you get lung cancer and it's fatal, you will die a horrible, painful death. You can't catch your breath. You get brain tumors that make you crazy! If you are worried about looking cool, you better quit now, because lung cancer will make you look and act like a freak!

Also, why should anyone around you have to suffer with it just because you wanted to smoke. Before they are done in the government (which won't be very long from now) they will pass laws making you responsible if you keep smoking around innocent people (mostly children) and they get sick from it. You know like asma and the such. Watch out "Big Brother" is watching and will only be watching more, not less!!!!!!!!!

I dont get it, you know its gon kill you in the long run..let me rephrase dat.u know its gon make u suffer before it kills you in the long run..yep dats it. People who smoke..some of em say"oh amma die n e way", how do you kno when you gon die? maybe you destiny is for you to live until your 83, but instead you go and smoke..which inturn give you lung cancer..with eczema(if dats how u spell it)..lets say you die at 45 with lung cancer..you just took 38 years off your life..in this period or time you had 2 live you could've accomplished everything you've wanted and had more time to just relax and see your grandchildren and childrens grow up and make you proud..but noooo amma shorten my death cuz everyone dies one day..STUPID ASSES..now y u gon go and say dat?? your just being arrogant. My opinion wats yours????

Your opinion is instantly disqualified because of your odd typing style.

umm, why would you say marijuana is not physically addicting or harmful??? That's the furthest thing from the truth i've ever heard. Marijuana 1. has no filters so you have all the bad stuff in there and you then hold the smoke in your lungs before you exhale. 2. It is addicting how many people do you know that has started off smoking weed and then moved on to other drugs once they couldn't fufill their "high???"

Other than that I hate cigarette smoke, nobody in my family really smokes. YOu definately won't smoke around me. I've noticed that black people don't smoke cigs, but they smoke blacks and weed. On my campus (HBCU) you don't really see to many cigs...

Compared to tobacco Marijuana is MUCH less harmful. Also, it has been medically proven that while marijuana is habit forming it is not physically addicting. People who stop smoking marijuana do not go through withdrawl symptoms. Ever. It is true that marijuana is a 'gateway' drug. People who smoke it are ten times more likely than non smokers to try other drugs--but people who drink alcohol are fifty times more likely to start crack. Which sounds more harmful? (AAA provided some of these stats).

Did you say AAA?

Anyway, the only reason why Marijuana is the 'gateway drug' is because it's illegal. Thus, being in circles with people who do illegal drugs, you're more likely to be exposed to other illegal drugs. If pot were legal, this wouldn't likely be the case.

Cars kill people, should we ban cars? In fact, people use their cars to kill themselves sometimes, why shouldn't we ban cars? What about toasters? People have been known to throw a toaster in a bathtub with themselves to kill themselves. Oh! Let's ban fast food. Fast food can lead to heart conditions and diabetes and sometimes even cancer! I can't wait for the bootlegged whopper.
