Election Madness(like Reefer Madness, but less funny)

First thing I would like to say is that all of the focus being put on 2008's election may not be a fantastic thing. I feel that President Bush will not be a Lame Duck going into January '09...he will use the lessened publicity on his presidency to do all sorts of crazy/scary things. Think on that for a moment...

WARNING: POLITICALLY UNAWARE RABBLE BEGINS HERE...
Secondly are all Presidential elections this hectic before the parties choose their candidates? There are eight democrats, and eight republicans. That to me seems a bit excessive.

As for the real meat of my posts, here it goes:

How in the world does one choose a candidate to support? I at 20 years old have no idea how I am supposed to pick which persons I support for positions in the US government, and I am not just talking about the Presidential election. There are plenty of ways to find information on the candidates, but what does one do when they have absolutely no idea what they want in a president. Moreover how is one to decide what they have no idea what to want in a president. What do I look at to decide that someone is the candidate for me? In Hillary's introduction her husband said, "The only reason to really support anybody for President, is that you believe they will be the best President." That is all well and good there Bill, but how do I know what I believe makes the best president?

I am hoping that by taking an active interest in politics, and following the races, I will be able to develop and Idea of what I want in presidential candidate.

I think the easiest way to sort through all this is to watch the debates. YouTube hosted a series of debates for each party. You can watch the debates on there and judge for yourself. If you don't know what a candidate is talking about, research it (wikipedia is often good enough).

As for eight candidates, given that most have identical financial backers, I think that eight each could very well be too few.
