Feminism

Why do so many people hesitate to call themselves feminists? All a feminist really is, is someone who wants the equality of women. Not the special treatment of women, not abortion, etc, just equality. Now, there are definately some bra-burners and crazy femmies out there, and yeah, a lot of us want family planning rights, but no man or woman should be ashamed of calling themselves a feminist, because no man or woman should be afraid of giving women equal rights.
While there are somethings all feminists are on the same wavelength about, not all feminists agree of abortion, for example. Family planning, yes, abortion, no. Also, there has been a new wave of feminists wanting to go back to being housewives. We shouldn't discourage that, but what we SHOULD do is encourage the freedom to choose. Women didn't always have the option of whether she could be a housewife or not, and now that we DO we should excersize our right to choose.

Meanwhile, I'm off to visit my feminist group for college. Remember, feminism means different things to different people, and we should respect that. Not all feminists are the same. An Iraqi feminist definately won't be for the same things as a UK or USA feminist.

So lets hear your thoughts about feminism. 1st, 2nd, or 3rd wave, regionally, or even opposed to feminism. =)

I completely agree. Feminism definitely does mean different things to different people and I think that's ok. It's unfortunate that lack of knowledge about feminism leads people to be afraid of it. Feminism is actually a very positive thing that asserts that all people are equal. Shouldn't that be something that is objectively positive and desirable?

I think feminism is overrated. Some people at my school use feminism as a type of "fitting in" technique. Which is really lame because It should be used that way. It should be used in the cases equality. I don't know, but I just think feminism is overrated.

i read an article on feminism in my social problems class and it mentioned how many people are afraid to call themselves feminists because of the fear of being considered gay...which i mean kinda makes sense to be but its crazy. your right feminism is really just equal rights. i don't understand how any women does not want equal rights.

It is about bashing men and shoving a radical agenda down women's throats whether they like it or not. Yes, there was once was a time when women didn't work outside of the home, but did anyone stop to ask whether women really wanted that in the first place or did they just assume we all wanted it! Feminists are trying to force women into occupations they don't want. I hate science, I hate blood and working sixteen hours a day doesn't interest me, there is not enough money to make me want to be a doctor. But I am suppose to want to be a doctor because it is dominated by men! So what! Let the men have the ulcers, the stress, the early deaths, I can live without it thank you very much! Give me a house full of kids, a ranch and a husband and I am good to go! And I don't need feminists telling me my dream is wrong or that I am a sellout! No one likes feminists because they are bitter, mean and no different than the men they claim are so hateful. Men rock! I love men and I won't feminists berate them. I have a son and since having him I have more concerned about how men are treated in this country and I won't let anyone treat him like he is a plague on the human existence simply because he has a penis! Feminists don't like unity, they want division. It is not about equal rights but making sure men have none! I am absolutely ashamed and appalled at what feminism has come to and how it has destroyed this great country. Take back marriage people! Take back womanhood! And to all the men out there-man up! Let's show feminists when we are united no one can bring us down!
