At school today, I was walking toward my first class, and in my hands I had my cell-phone and car keyes. I was walking alone, wearing shorts, t-shirt and running shoes. Suddenly, it hit me, just how much freedom I had as an individual and as a woman.
Here I was walking on a college campus. If I had been born one hundred and fifty years ago, there would not be women walking on college campuses unless they were the janitors. Here I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt; one hundred years ago, I would not be wearing that. I would be uncomfortable in a long skirt and maybe a corset. One hundred years ago, I probably would have to be escorted by a male chaperon, and now I have the freedom to walk where I want to. Maybe not in complete safety and without fear, but I can still walk alone.
Not only that but as an individual I have so much freedom. The car keyes give me freedom to go anywhere and if I need to go over an ocean, I can fly to almost anywhere on the globe. With that cell-phone I can call anyone, and spread and obtain information from friends, family and complete strangers. Perhaps cell-phone calls are not totally uncensored, but at least it is not monitored and restricted by the government.
My freedoms are numerous, and today it just makes me marvel at what I have.
