Sex in the Media - What happened?

I was responding to a blog post earlier basically about the glorification of women exposing themselves on music videos and such... So i thought i would write a bit about it...

I don't think we can really blame solely blame the women in those videos. So who can we blame?

I think the one most to blame is the entertainment industry. From the very beginning, anyone who wanted to be someone has had to "stand out from the crowd." As women, we have the advantage of sexual appeal to men. In those early days, most casting directors and such were men with sexual needs. Not to throw out my harsh opinion too much, but any women who felt that her talent and/or looks would not be enough to set her apart could have very well provided sexual favors to get ahead. Then came the producers into the problem. To seperate their production from the rest, they used sex appeal to gather an audience. Can you imagine a time when all that was needed to have sex appeal in their production was was a bit of modest leg? Then this started a spiral effect of more and more productions using sex appeal. And with all that sex you see everyday in commercials, ads, movies, television shows - it has made our society desensitized to it! Honestly, seeing women almost naked on TV does not shock me one bit, why should it when i am exposed to it everyday?

But the sad thing about all of this? Women have to completely expose themselves to (much more easily) achieve fame. For example, before the Paris Hilton sex tape release, she was known, however, she was not the star that she is today. While the tape wasn't intentionally to get publicity, thats what it equated to.

I guess the next question is... What can be done to reverse this? That's one i am still pondering.
