Global Warming: MARS vs Earth

Attempting to brush off Global Warming here on Earth due to climactic changes on Mars is odd, since the changes on each planet albeit coincidental, would not be driven by the same causes.

The only relevant factor the Earth and Mars share is the sun, so if the warming were real and related, that would be the logical place to look. As it happens, the sun is being watched and measured carefully back here on earth, and it is not the primary cause of current climate change.

As for the alleged extraterrestrial warming, there is extremely little evidence of a global climate change on Mars. The only peice I'm aware of is a series of photographs of a single icy region in the southern hemisphere that shows melting over a six year period (about 3 Martian years).

Here on earth we have direct measurements from all over the globe, widespread glacial retreat, reduction of sea ice, and satellite measurements of the lower toposphere up to the stratosphere. To compare this mountain of data to a few photgraphs of a single region on another planet strains credulity. And in fact, the relevant scientists beleive the observation described above is the result of a regional change caused by Mars' own orbital cycles, like what happened during the Earth's glacial cycles.

Anyone trying to draw conclusions about what is happening here on Earth from all this might as well be from another planet.

Back to Mars for a quick summary:

On Earth, we have poles melting, surface temp rising, tropospheric temps rising, permafrost melting, glaciers worldwide melting, CO2 concentrations increasing, borehole analysis showing warming, sea ice receding, proxy reconstructions showing warming, sea level rising, sea surface temp rising, energy imbalance, ice sheets melting, and stratospheric cooling, all of which leads us to beleive the Earth is undergoing Global Warming driven by an enhanced Greenhouse effect.

On Mars we have one spot melting, which leads us to beleive that . . . one spot is melting.
Forgive me for not being reassured.

As the skipper over at Barking Moonbat (http://www.barking-moonbat.com/) asked, "what did George Bush ever do to Mars?

Global warming and cooling have been phenomena evident for hundreds of thousands of years. I have no doubt that the planet is undergoing change. To blame this on the industrialization of the earth during the last hundred years is ludicrous. Each volcanic eruption spews more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than man's collective emissions. Speaking about emissions, the notion that domesticated cattle contribute by gaseous emissions is also ridiculous. Prior to the increased domestication of beef cattle, Bison covered the North American continent in countless numbers, as did wild animals in Africa and Asia. Glaciers that extended as far south as Ohio and Pennsylvania have retreated to the present polar ice cap thousands of years before habitation by humans, and as recent as the 1970's "scientists" warned us of a "new ice age" that would mean the end of civilization as we know it. OMG the sky is falling!!!!

The real deal is this:

Those seeking to "level the playing field" want to penalize the United States by making it more expensive for us to compete in the global economy. Additional regulation of gaseous emissions will make it more expensive for the United States to compete. This will result in greater trade deficits,
continued loss of manufacturing jobs, and a lower standard of living. Global warming is a political issue, and there is no science that can definitively prove that this minor temperature change means that man's activities are responsible for it.

Very well said. Thank you for providing a voice of reason in this rediculous and useless debate.
