So the second gubernatorial debate just aired a little while ago here in Florida. Davis and Crist, the two front-runners, are neck and neck in the polls. Davis was declared the winner of this debate by the "experts" on the local news.
I'm hoping for Davis, because despite Crist's exaggerated attack ads, I know the guy and he does his job and he doesn't lie to voters on his positions. He does what he says and he says what he means. So I'm for him. I already cast my vote because we have early voting here.
I did, however, find Max Linn, the last minute 3rd party candidate, very interesting. I liked how he called Crist on a lot of his bullshit. I liked some of his ideas too, but since I already voted, nothing I could do about my vote at this point even if I wanted to. I'm worried that he will take votes away from Davis and not Crist and cost Crist the election the way that Nader did in the presidential election several years ago. Because he does have good progressive ideas, he could be very good for Florida... I just don't think that this late in the election season he'd be able to pull out a win. I'd never heard of him until last week when I checked all the candidates out before voting. Though I thought his nod to the conservative voters who might care about such things, noting that he's a good Christian and goes to church on Sunday, was more than unnecessary... said something to the effect of "I believe in separation of church and state, and I'll enforce that like never before when I'm governor, but make no mistake, I'm an active participant in my church and my wife and I attend regularly." I get *why* it's good for him politically to say such a thing, but I still find it disgusting that religion is even mentioned in such a context. Just like when religious officials bring partisan politics into their sermons.
Another thing I noticed was that Crist was really having a nice time putting words into the mouth of Davis. Davis would say one thing, and Crist would turn around and say that he had just said something completely different... way beyond reinterpreting words... flat out making things up and saying Davis had just said them.
And if anyone else happened to see the debate, was it just me or was Chris Matthews (yes, of "Hardball") really favoring Crist over the other two?
