When I was 11 the internet had just started to spread its wings and take off. I remember the huge bulky cell phones that were similar in size to a standard cordless home phone. Computers were bulky also and DOS was popular. The internet was created by the military, which some of you may not have known. I have often seen this world fall apart under the “wing” of technology and it seems as we technologically advance there becomes great things, but also the fall of society as a whole.
When I was a child activities that were popular were: playing outside, drawing with crayons on paper, listening to bedtime stories and reading them, watching older cartoons, and playing “make believe” by myself with toys and fake cooking stuff.
Kids now have so many more options, but most of the activities involve sitting and “busy“ toys to keep kids from bugging their parents. Instead of drawing with crayons on normal paper children have the option of drawing on a special board on the computer. They also have special paper and markers they can use so they don’t make a mess. Although this is a good idea, what happened to disciplining our children and teaching them not to make a mess? I hear about 11 year olds having cell phones which is down right ridicioulous. Children and teens can get on the computer on sites such as myspace and post pictures of themselves. Children have video games to keep them preoccupied as well. What happened to playing with your children outside?
“But mommy I want to play x-box 360”
“ ok son/daughter we don’t have to play outside it is boring.” The response should be: “ We can go play outside together and maybe later we can play 360.”
A great thing I think for children is not having some of these things avaliable. When I was younger our family was poor. I got my first Nintendo 64 when I was 13 years old when Play station had already been out for quite awhile. I played video games but since I wasn’t raised with video games and technology ( and we couldn’t afford it) I still had the desire to explore outside and do other things.
As for children technology is teaching them to be lazy and uncreative, but if you can prevent this then it Is for the better.
Pros of technology: (I guess)
We can access any information we want
We can call a relative in another state
We can watch any movie or show we want
We don’t have to hand wash our dishes (Although I have never used a dishwasher before… I would not know where to begin)
Many diseases and illnesses have been treated and cured because of technology (This is a really the best thing)
If we want to talk to someone in Africa, or china. We can because of the computer.
This site of course
We can microwave just about anything
We can order things from our own home with out having to step foot inside a store.
Scientific advancements have made man things possiable.
Cons of Technology:
If a world disaster happened we would be thrown back into the stone age literally. We depend on technology for electricity, our cell phones and the internet. If there is no one to operate power plants then the power may not be restored.
Do we really need a grilled cheese maker? No. Step 1 take butter put it in a skillet. Step 2 butter both sides of bread. Step 3 put cheese on sandwich and place in skillet.
Like many things technology has flaws. Computers and cell phones malfunction.
Instead of stealing your identity just from an ATM someone can steal all your information off your computer. Of course this brings new jobs but also new crimes.
With all the technology we have we haven’t progressed in regards to finding another fuel alternative.
We haven’t progressed with many things. Many questions still can not be answered despite the technology we already have. I hear all the time: “ I am working on a new energy source.” but I have heard that for the past 5 or 6 years. It does that time, but we could fix the problem.
If you look back before technology things seemed a lot simpler. People would go out and dance for fun back in the 50’s. People would go out to the movies as a “treat”. Teen pregnancy was a lot lower because parents were around, mom’s normally didn’t work so they were home. This could also be the new age.
I believe technology has taught our youth to be lazy and disobedient. Technology has caused society as a whole to lose its creativity. What would some people do with out a computer to create their “work”? Not only that, it also sparks the urge for us to frequently say “I’m bored” when there is nothing on T.V, no one to talk to on the phone or no one online.
The 2 main things to appreciate from technology have been ProU and the medical advances. Other than that what is the point in having all this technology when one day we really could be sent back into the stone age and would have to progress all over again. So are we really better off with technology?

That just about covers it.

Technology has really come a long way. I remeber when I used to see on tv people carrying those bulky cell phones. Only rich people had them back then. Now everyone has one and the phones look way better . Good info on technology.
I can remember the bag phone, mainly because my parents refused to part with it until the phone company refused to support it. It was about the size of a shoebox.

It seems to me that you people are misinterpreting Albert Einstein's famous quote, "It has become appallingly clear that our technology has surpassed our humanity." Modern conveniences are great but for everything like the automobile, the airplane, the telephone, or the radio, we have a handgun, the grenade, mustard gas and the nuclear bomb. American's especially have become so detached to the rest of the world even though the internet has given almost everyone the ability to communicate with people all over the world. Can people grasp that the United States consumes 30% of the world's resources? Imagine if China and India, who's population is each more than 4 times that of ours, consumed resources at our rate! The planet would be in exponentially worse shape than it is now, and global warming would reach new a critical mass. Cellphones are great for having incase your car breaks down or if you need to contact someone in case of emergency. However, the people who use them dont use them for what they are intended for! They use them to text their friends, to send answers across classrooms and gab for hours on end with friends. The point is that if we used our technology as a way to advance the human race and make life more convenient, then those are good technologies. When we use technology inappropriately, we are showing how appalling certain aspects of technology are.
One ProgU Blogger has taken a vow to stay off the retail grid for an entire year. She made it about 5 days before she started making small compromises but I think she is persevering in the spirit of the vow. I think she is a little whacky but I find her resourcefulness on finding used stuff and dedication impressive and more importatnly, entertaining.
I think it would be interesting and entertaining if you were to take a vow to refrain from using anything electrical for ONE WEEK. No electric lights, nothing that used batteries, no car because it has an electrical system, no computer, no TV, no phone, no excalators or elevators, no electric stove, no public transportation. If it uses electricity it is out. A good start would be to flick all of your circuit breakers on your home to the "OFF" position. Then you would not inadvertantly use electricity around the house by mistake.
Electricity is of course only one aspect of technology but it is a very important one. (Hey, I'm not asking you to deprive yourself of indoor plumbing even though the water was probably delivered to you with pumps driven by electric motors!) I think being off the electrical grid for a week would give you adequate time to really judge for yourself if technology makes your life better or not. At the end of the week you could fire up your computer and tell the rest of us whether or not electricity made your world better. I'm really interested to hear what you missed the most and what you didn't.
If you decided "not better", then I guess you would probably choose for that to be your last blog and you would shut-off the computer and call your ISP and local utility for a disconnect.
If you turn all of the power off in your house, just make sure you don't have anything in the fridge that will spoil!
I would probably miss having a refrigerator about as much as anything.
Are all the people here a little whacky?

is an originated idea made from scratch better than one made from a technological source, such as a computer?
performance wise, not really....but technology does create a lot of error. it's like everything that is created nowadays by a computer or something is made just to malfunction in a certain time period....so to answer your question, "So are we really better off with technology?"
To me, probably so due to the quickness of being able to create things, but as a society who can just as you said....fall at any given time and do not really have too many creative people still alive, no, no we aren't too much better off.

I disagree with one of the comments you made about finding a new fuel alternative. We have progressed, it is just slow progress. It's hard to do research on this type of thing. It takes a lot of time and funding, so sometimes it appears to move slowly.
