GREEK LIFE!!!

I went Greek last semester! My time spent being a Greek so far has totally made a difference in my life and in the lives of the people closest to me. I have been struggling lately about how most people in our society view Greek sorority and fraternity members. Please let me explain what our sorority does so that members of Greek Life organizations are not seen in a bad light.

Let me first start with the community service aspect of Greek Life. Our sorority has a philanthropy for children and we participate in many events for children in our community. One event that we sponsor is called Faculty Night Out (FNO). We have one night a month devoted to watching faculty members' children while they participate in committee meetings and other events. FNO is offered to faculty as a safe place to bring their children so that they can have an enjoyable night out. Another thing that we do for children of our community is Build-A-Bear Workshops. Many of our girls plan a group party at Bulid-A-Bear and we make 10-15 bears. After we have made them look cute and fun, we deliver the finished bears to our local fire station where they can give the bears to children in need. Another great thing that we offer to the children of our community is an easter egg hunt on our college presidents' lawn. The children have a great time! Not only does our sorority work with children, however. We also have a many events for senior citizens in our community. We are in the process of planning a senior citizens prom at our local nursing home. This event will take place in March and will include dancing, singing, and eating! Our ladies have invited a fraternity to help us with this event and they have decided that they would love to help.

Not only should Greek Organizations be known for their community service projects, but they should also be known by the high standards that they hold. Every fraternity and sorority has both academic and general life standards that every member must live up to. When each member holds eachother to these standards, it is not only great for the organization, but also betters the individual. Leaders come from Greek organizations because each of these people must learn that high standards is a must in this society.

As you can see just from the ways in which we serve our community, Greek Life organizations are not groups of dumb college kids that just want to party and have fun. We offer substance. We offer ways to serve. We offer support. We don't join to have parties and friends. We join to become leaders!

That's cool. I'm personally taking Greek myself, so that I can better study the Bible. It's great to get just a little closer to the original intent of the writing.

:) I am also very interested in the Greek language. However, what I was getting at here was more along the lines of Greek Sororities and Fraternities. Thanks for the comment!

I am thinking about going Greek, and have been doing research on sororities at my campus, and the one I am thinking about pledging. As a result, I get annoyed anytime I watch a movie where the girls in a sorority are shown as airheads or full-time partiers who can't imagine life past college. I have gotten to know girls from all the sororities on my campus, and even the ones who are not member of the ones I want to pledge are great people. they are generally friendly, smart, ambitious, and hard-working. They have a life outside of their sisters, but consider their sororites important.

Just if you were interested, I did pledge, Alpha Sigma Tau. What is your sorority?

Keep up the good work and stay out of trouble, and maybe you can help change that stereotype.
