Lawmakers in our state are considering a bill that would require people convicted of a driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs to have a special license plate.
I know that there are people who will disagree with my view because someone they love was killed by a drunken driver. Just know that I mean no harm toward you.
But not all of these people who are convicted of DUI are alcoholics. And why should kids with learner's permits have to drive around with a yellow license plate on their car?
If we do this, then you're going to have to tattoo the foreheads of all the child molesters and rapists who are roaming the streets and keep re-offending.
It really should depend on the situation — if anyone was seriously hurt or killed.
This whole license plate DUI thing is a prime example of the Scarlet Letter syndrome. Shaming people will do no good.
If this proposal becomes law, does that mean the police officers, lawyers, judges and congressmen who have been convicted of DUIs will have to advertise that they are all drunks? Would there be a special law exempting them from the process?
Next, will there be special-issue plates for second- and third-degree child molesters? How about wife beaters? Will there be a special redhot license plate with a fist on it warning of a bad temper?
Or what about the morbidly obese? Will they be issued license plates that say "I have to be charged for two airline seats"?
And we can't forget the special plates for those over the age of 80 who shouldn't even be driving, period. Their plates can say "Caution: Can't see over steering wheel."
And we can't leave out the lowest scum on earth — the smokers. They should have license plates that warn "Stay 25 feet away — a smoker is driving."
That's how ridiculous this proposed law is.
Maybe all the child molesters — or at least the few who are in prison — can design their own license plates for when they get out.

Wow, what state are you in?
I agree and disagree with you.
The morbidly obese comment, i feel, does not relate to the proposed law (unless there are multiple studies showing that obese drivers cause many accidents). There is some reasoning to the proposed law.
However, most true drunks aren't too quiet about their problem... My grandmother has had several DUI's so i know from experience. So i don't think these license plates will do much good in shaming these individuals. And most drivers can assume that a driver is drunk based on his/her erratic driving (I've witness it before).
And some drunk drivers may never be caught anyway!
I agree that this law is flawed.
Lawmakers should really spend more time developing better ideas, obviously.
Props on the interesting blog!

agreed. it's not right. cops will definately take avantage over the situation and pull people over just to check them. (not like im worried about being caught). just because you got one dui doesn't mean youre a raging alcoholic.
